1st generation Dumble Overdrive Special 50W
In this and the following two clips I post three clips from the song "Blues vom Anfang" from the CD "42 songs" by Michael Köhlmeier
http://shop.orf.at/orf/shop.tmpl?art=2225&lang=DE
Electric guitar played by Charly Bonat (’63 Stratocaster and a 1st generation Dumble ODS 50W head thru the 1x12" Celestion speaker of a White Amp "Little Rock" combo).
I tried to post three short clips from this song that demonstrate some different 1st generation flavours.
Have fun!

Hi Max,
very nice! Thanks for sharing. What type of tremolo was used in the first clip?

Hmmm.... wheres the Dumble tone? Zendrive I assume? Sounds quite thin here.turbo5speed wrote:How about Dumble tone without a Dumble?

Re: Dumble video/sound clip reference, real Dumbles only please
The "Dumble tone" IMO is one of the many prejudices in regard to what Alexander does: providing a creative player with the freedom to chose the kind of "tone" this player thinks to be the one best suited for his performance of a certain piece of music.Harald.Nowak wrote:wheres the Dumble tone?
The Dumble amps I know IMO are rather versatile instruments and IMO this is just what is demonstrated by all the posts in this thread.
As an example: For this performance with Coolio Charly Bonat used exactly the same 1st generation ODS as for "Blues vom Anfang", but dialed in to provide him with some different flavour:

So people who might be interested in Dumble amps because they are looking for a Robben Ford or Larry Carlton or David Lindley etc. sound in a can, will perhaps be disappointed, that after for the first time plugging their guitar cable into the input of a Dumble amp perhaps it won't be Steve Lukather etc. what they perceive. For myself this was a very humbling experience around thirty years back, but a very educational one, too.
Concerning "Dumble tone without a Dumble": Yes, obviously no Dumble amp on the stage, so probably a Zen indeed.
Cheers and a great weekend for all here!

Re: Dumble video/sound clip reference, real Dumbles only please
Thanks for posting this. This is what initially put me off on building a clone. Seems like so many people were obsessed with some of these famous Dumble players, that I completely dismissed it as a one trick pony. After researching more, I have heard clips from guitarists with different styles that were able to coax out something completely different, and this was what brought me around.Max wrote:The "Dumble tone" IMO is a complete misconception of what Alexander does: providing a creative player with the freedom to chose the kind of "tone" this player thinks to be the one best suited for his performance of a certain piece of music.Harald.Nowak wrote:wheres the Dumble tone?

I'm still sourcing parts, but hope to get my build underway soon. I really want to experience the Dumble tone stack. I grew up playing Ampegs, and always found the FMV tone stack lacking. I also grew up with the prejudice that preamp distortion sucked and power-amp and pi distortion was somehow "better." Obviously HAD has proven that wrong.
The crazy part is I recently discovered that one of my favorite solos, which I thought was a Dumble, turned out to be a guitar into an Ampeg SVT. Go figure. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reelin'_In_the_Years
It's never too late to have a happy childhood.
