Using RN65Ds on both plate and Cathode?

Post by Joost »

I ordered my parts for a 124 build and saw in the schematic that the cathode resistors should be 1% metal film Mepco/Electra. But since I couldn't find them, I also got RN65D resitors for the cathode. Is that ok? Would it matter, metal film is metal film right?

I could be wrong, but you wouldn't think so. Metal films are metal film resistors.
Yours Sincerely

Yeah, I thought that too, but what trips me up is that HAD used different metal films for the plate and the cathode

That's fine cathode resistor's aren't a huge deal.
I usually use some brand of metal fim there.

The Mepco/Electra he used there are long gone, so good luck finding them.

The primary reason for using a metal film in the cathode is for temperature stability. Just use a decent quality MF resistor, Dales, Koa etc. Stay away from Xicon MFs, just my experience, but I find they add a nasty edge to the sound.

I like to use the Dale CCF60 there.

My choice too! Nice resistors!

Yeah, that's what I thought too. But apparently, on the anode side, the brand of metal film does influence the sound (which makes sense), so I just wanted to make sure.

thanks!

I like the CCF60 resistors as well.

Don't get any of those PR01 resistors. Even though they are spec'd for 1 watt they are tiny and about the size of a normal 1/8 watt resistor.

Don't let that smoke out!

+1 as well for the CCF60s.

Any opinions on the CMF60's, that the tubedepot sells?

Yeah, I've used those micro RN65D like resistors a couple times at the cathode location, no complaints. Matter of fact, at my most recent TD order I picked a few of the 1.5k's again for that purose.

Even when bypassed?
