xformer for D-lator

Post by SoundPerf »

I'm sorry, I know it's here somewhere, but can't seem to find it now. I remember someone posting a link to a business that had a perfect transformer for making a d-lator. (or basically powering a 12AX7) Any help finding this site would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

I heard of the button from the tube depot, and the little one from Allen amps. I've tried one myself but I really like the on from Allen.

The thing to watch for it is the height of the transformer, if it's too tall you can't put it inside a 1U rack box.

The Allen is 1 21/32" tall, about 1 5/8".
2 1/16" wide.

The Weber reverb PT is 2 3/4" tall.
2 1/4" wide.

The Fender reverb PT from AES is 2" tall
2 3/8" wide.

So it looks like the Allen & TubeDepot are about the same size. Thanks for that info.

So is putting the tranny inside a more common practice then on the back outside?

Just got in my version of "the button" today from Heyboer. Because of the open frame it's just barely small enough to allow both horizontal and vertical mounting inside an 1RU enclosure. It has enough voltage doubler current to supply a 12AT7(10mA nominal) and a 12AX7(3mA).

Just in case anyone's wondering what the specs of the PT that Dumble used.
Triad R-2C= 135V@115V, 15mA, 6.3V@900mA

Mi version= 140V@120V, 30mA, 6.3V@600mA

Tom, based on this open framed unit I'm not sure if that Allen enclosed unit will inside mount horizontal or even vertical. I guess it will depend on the chassis thickness and the actual encased lamination width. If it fits, it's certainly an excellent option with an attractive price point too.

The 1RU that I plan on using is .050 thick, which leaves slightly less than 1.650 vertical. This PT is 1.635 and it looks to be on the same frame as that Tube Depot "button".

The Allen measures 1.638" high (sample of one).

What 1RU enclosure are you going to use?

I've been keeping my eye out for an inexpensive one because ideally, I would like to make a case that holds three or four 1U units.

The Hammond box I used is huge but I wanted to make sure the circuit was something I would use before I sank a lot of $$ into.

I just don't understand what makes a simple 1U box worth over $50?

Thanks TM! I have to order a couple more.

Tom,

I agree with you. It probably has to do with space these days. Some prefer objects not to take up so much room so they jack up the price.

You could make that work; as a doubler you would have about 353V and 7mA of current which is plenty for a 12AX7. Then you could use the 12.6V tap with a bridge and regulator for a DC filament supply or you could run another tiny 6.3VAC PT for the filament voltage and use the 12.6V tap for the power supply of a bypass relay .
