Re: Dumble 044
AFAIK Alexander Dumble built a total of around between 50 and 60 specimens of the 2nd and 3rd generation ODS amps with the "funky OD entrance", the "pre-classic" tone stack and without a ratio control etc. and with series numbers between around #001X and #007X. AFAIK most of these are 50W.
AFAIK Alexander Dumble exported a reported total between 20 and 35 (depending on the source of the report) of these amps to Europe - i.e. around half of all the 2nd and 3rd generation ODS amps built by Alexander Dumble!
AFAIK most of these 2nd and 3rd generation ODS amps exported to Europe have been sold by the two European distributors ("Applied Acoustics" and "Spiecker & Pulch", both located in Germany) fitted into a combo cabinet that has been built in Germany (#0019 an exception e.g.).
AFAIK you’ll meet different versions of these "Made in Germany" combo cabinets:
AFAIK most of the 2nd generation ODS amps sold by Applied Acoustics have been fitted into a combo cabinet that has more or less the same dimensions and more important specs (oval hole e.g.) as the "Made in USA" combo cabinets, but without the Tolex or suede covering and with (two different versions of) a wicker grill. AFAIK most of these "original specs" cabinets (#0044 an example) have tops, sides and bottoms made from lumber core plywood (like many of the US made Dumble combo and speaker cabinets), but some have tops, sides and bottoms made from hardwood lumber (see the attached pictures of a 2nd generation ODS).
AFAIK most of the 3rd generation ODS amps imported by Applied Acoustics and Spiecker & Pulch have been sold fitted into a combo cabinet made from hardwood lumber, with a wicker grill, a (slightly) slanted front and without the oval hole. These combo cabinets look rather similar to the hardwood cabinets of Boogie or Jim Kelley amps e.g. (see the attached pictures of a 3rd generation ODS).
Probably because some of the first (or later) owners of these "export combos" at some point decided to prefer a head cabinet, AFAIK some of these "export ODS amps" have later been fitted into head cabinets of different styles and made by some local cabinetmaker by order of the owner.
AFAIK in the meantime some of these 2nd and 3rd generation ODS amps that Alexander Dumble exported to Europe did find their way back home. Two examples: AFAIK one of these amps is now used by John Mayer and one by Henry Kaiser. AFAIR Jelle reported here, that he did like Henry’s ODS 50W a lot. AFAIK in the meantime some of these "export ODS amps" have been fitted into "Made in USA style" (tolex or suede covered) head or combo cabinets.

thanks for your info.
But I knew most of it, and the rest from the Dumble Book.
Keep up your good info for others.
Re: Dumble 044
The 3rd gen ods that I played at Henry Kaiser's house was a 100w and this one was bought from dumble directly in the late 70s. Henry told me it still had the original tubes in it which really surprised me. The amp was not very loud and did not have much highs and lows. It is the ods from the crystal lattice video. Very nice amp.
The 50w ods was a later version that had received service from Mr Dumble. It sounded glorious.

Re: Dumble 044
Jelle, thanks for the info. Do you know what happened to his "export ODS 50W". Telling from a picture on Bill Morgan's site, he fitted it into a red head cabínet (AFAIR made by Mojo - as I've been told). I attached two pictures.jelle wrote:The 50w ods was a later version that had received service from Mr Dumble. It sounded glorious.
Here's the info on Bill's site ("Henry Kaiser's Dumble Amps"): http://web.archive.org/web/200904010608 ... ble-e.html
source for the attched pictures: http://www.roblivesey.com/dumble/ "blave"
BTW: His "silverface" ODS 100W isn't a 3rd generation ODS but a transition generation ODS with a ratio control and a (small) presence control etc. (see the attached picture).
Have a nice weekend!

Re: Dumble 044
I worked on Luke's Dumble of this era in the 90's, really not a great sounding amp
Re: Dumble 044
John, don't you think that this may perhaps be a matter of personal taste - at least to a certain degree?husky wrote:I worked on Luke's Dumble of this era in the 90's, really not a great sounding amp

I did not see that Red Export ODS. I would have loved to see it. I do not know what happened to it, and if he even still has it, just don't know.
Have a nice weekend too,
Jelle

In the post above Max said it was Henry Kaiser's ODS 50W.

Re: Dumble 044
Yes, I got that. When I played it years ago it was being borrowed from Kaiser for a tone shootout. What I'm asking is if there is a serial number to identify it. And if anyone knows what schematic would be closest to it. Probably couldn't go wrong with #40, but wondering....M Fowler wrote:In the post above Max said it was Henry Kaiser's ODS 50W.

Re: Dumble 044
Doesn't the back of the red cab amp show #044? So the first amp shown in this thread #044 is the same amp in that red head cab?

The serial # of Henry's ODS 50W is in the 003X range and not #0044.
Henry's red ODS 50W is one of those ODS amps that Alexander Dumble exported to Europe.
Its original combo cabinet was made by Applied Acoustics, the European importer.
This "export" ODS 50W did find its way back home and to Henry Kaiser in the early 90ies. Henry Kaiser then preferred using it in this red head cabinet made by some cabinet maker in the US on Henry Kaiser's order.
The circuit of Henry's "export" ODS 50W, now residing in this wooden red US made head cabinet, is a version of the 2nd generation ODS 50W circuit and reportedly a great example for the timbre and feel of the 2nd generation 50W ODS amps with a still untouched and all original 2nd generation ODS 50W circuit: http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12870
BTW: If someone here should know and like the sound of Henry's red "export" ODS 50W, I personally would recommend to stay away from the implementation of ratio controls or precision power supplies etc.. But of course this is only my personal taste in regard to these 2nd generation ODS 50W amps.
Cheers,
Max
