Re: SSS #2 Started

Post by dreric »

Hi guys,

Made a little progress and I thought I'd update the thread.

I became worried about the fit on the hi and low filters. The low filter is in front of the cap board and I was concerned about placement so I made up the filters.

After completing the low filter on the nifty Grayhill rotary switches seen in previous pictures I discovered the difference between a double pole and a single pole switch. I thought I could jury rig it to work but I ended up remaking the filter on a single pole rotary.

My chassis has 12 positions and the switches at the local store had 12 positions so rather than ordering switches with adjustable stops I added a few values and attempted to add a bypass position. Note my use of the word "attempted" as in we'll see if this works!

Resistor values:
470k
390k
270k
180k
150k
100k
68k
39k
22k

Here's my attempt at testing the low filter. Not really sure what this is supposed to look like but it seems I have bypass (conduction, no resistance) and then the number start high and go low.

The measurements are taken from the switch before i put in the 270K resistor which connects over to the hi filter.

And the Hi Filter.

I decided to use some STK caps I had on hand because they sound good to my ear and have a convenient dimension for construction this seems to satisfy my need (which is over the top on this build) for things to look good.

Ascending cap values:

100pf
330pf
470pf
.001uf
.0022uf
.0047uf
.01uf
.02uf
.03uf
.047uf

Here's my attempt to test the switch, again I'm just looking for a descending value (I think??).

Thanks for looking!!!!!

Been working on the power supply:

It passed the smoke test!

Voltages measured with the Variac set to 102VAC, as on the hand drawn schematic.

B+ = 390

The power supply is unloaded, just raw measurements from the nodes.

Node, my voltage , hand drawn schematic voltage

H, 390VDC, 378VDC
E, 390VDC, 377VDC
G, 390VDC, (can't find voltage listing)
D, 390VDC, 352VDC
B, 310VDC, 301VDC
A, 390VDC, 298VDC
C, 390VDC, 300VDC

How does this look / measure?

I think you are well on your way. Node A has neither preamp node or FET draw so the unloaded delta should be expected. if you feel comfortable with continuity in your layout, you could install preamp, PI tubes and check voltages again.

Small progress....................

Shielded cable runs (anyone else hate working with this stuff?) also shows reverb on / off switch.

Effect loop, decided to ground this in a way keeping with ODS builds.

Reverb transformer connections

Thanks Tom!

Got a little more progress in today:

Back side of FET board
FET in situ
Input wiring
Tone switches
Art shot of FET

Got the main board wired in. Haven't double checked any thing but I think the connections are right.

Here's some random shots:

Thanks for the complements!

One of the odd things about the SSS is how HAD wired the preamp sockets. Mounting the socket to the board or wire runners to sockets away from the board would be more conventional. Instead HAD ran wires from the traces to the sockets. Here's how I did mine:

Had enough time to finish wiring. Next physical, visual, probe ..................and fire test!

Here's random angles of the build:

Thanks to all for your interest,
