My quest to build the $25k Dumble double baffle 4x12

Post by amplifiednation »

Ever since this Dumble cabinet was found on eBay last year, many people expressed interest in it. We talked about the design here and dissected the cab pretty well - a standard 4x12 cab with two 2x12 baffles, two back panels. Maverick music had the listing and was selling it with 4 EVs...this cab is not for the weak!! $25,000 buy-it-now!!

I pulled this pic of Google images...
[IMG:686:692]http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz97 ... 242b90.jpg[/img]

eBay listing:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dumble-4X12-Cab ... 7675.l2557

I was able to get a couple more pics...with the back panels off, I'll share them later.

So I received probably 5-6 emails from customers that wanted me to build a cloned cabinet for them, but no one pulled the trigger. Finally last month I got an order for two of them, black suede with dual Vox cloth baffles....so it was on!!

I've been playing around with design ideas for past month, trying to figure out how to use the crossbar for baffle support, and how I could tweak a Marshall slant cab plan into this. Last night and today I finally made some dust.

Here's the prototype I built today. It turns out the cab will need to be a little taller as the double thick sides ate up some clearance. The good news is I got everything corrected for the real thing... The bad news is I didn't have enough black tolex to wrap the cab...so the prototype got some pricey black suede!!!

It is coming out great...let me know your thoughts. I'll be selling these now that I've knocked the design out.

This is the first 4x12 Amp Nation has done...not really difficult but took the majority of shop time today. Slant cabs are no fun!

Main woodworking session...

Looks fantastic. What was the original loaded with? It wasn't 4 EVM 12L's was it?

Routed, sanded, and painted

[IMG:1024:768]http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz97 ... e9a557.jpg[/img]

I almost forgot the handle cutouts but I remebered before it was too late

[IMG:1024:768]http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz97 ... d5c34f.jpg[/img]

Back...same cross bar as the front for back panel mounts.

Sueded! This took a lot of suede! I almost used some wacky tolex...but pulled the trigger on the good stuff. If I had enough buckskin...oh yeah I would have done it.

So now onto the baffles
Thanks for checking out my thread.

Can't tell from the pics, but is this finger, butt or 1/2 blind dovetail jointed?

When I was still friends with D, one of these was at MusicWorks in LA. Can't remember who it belonged to, but it was a ridiculously heavy cab. I never inquired if it was 5/8 or 3/4" plywood, but I assumed 5/8" like a Marshall.

Reinforced rabbet joints on this one...there is so much glue surface in the inside cleats, this is virtually indestructible.

I used 3/4" Baltic birch, definitely could have gotten away with 5/8" though.

Jim you were selling Marshall style 412s for awhile, weren't you? Are you still? How were those constructed? I've seen enough production ones to backline AC/DC, I'm just curious on the more boutique builds. I know Kerry Wright does a fine 4x12 as well.

And yeah once this is loaded and locked in the back panels its not gonna move. I put in 5/8" baffles. I really don't need this...but I had to do a prototype to get the design to work.

Its too bad I didn't have enough black tolex cause this suede is pricey!!

I'd like to try one fully split into two 2x12s, one with EVs and one half with celestions, or Altecs. We'll see... that will be even heavier with a centerpiece.

The 4 sides, the crossbars and the bracings of the original Dumble 4x12 speaker cabinets I'm familar with aren't made of plywood but are made of a rather lightweight kind of lumber core wood that AFAIR in the 70ies and eighties has been sold in the US under the name of "Mahogany lumber core". AFAIR the baffles on the front and back are made of plywood (thinnner than the sides, crossbars and bracings) from the same kind of "Mahogany" wood. AFAIR this "Mahogany" lumber core wood and "Mahogany" plywood had been imported to the US from somewhere in Asia. Perhaps it's still available in the US, perhaps not. I don't know. IMO a complete plywood construction - as shown in the pictures of the replica - might deliver a kind of tone rather different from the tone of an original Dumble 4 x 12" cabinet with sides, crossbars and bracings made of a rather lightweight "Mahogany" lumber core and (thinner) baffles made of a rather lightweight "Mahogany" plywood.

The original Dumble 4 x 12" cabinets I'm familiar with originally have been loaded with 4 12" EVM speakers. I've attached a picture from a Dumble catalogue where you can see the "EV" labels in such a 4 x12" without a grille cloth on the right of ODS #0075 (Steve Farris of Mr. Mister).

Taylor, I'm sure you know but I found out the hard way they all differ. Best to actually have the intended speaker on hand and best ~1/4" on the small side than the other way. I used a randomly dl'd pdf emi spec on a 15 cutout as I thought it was all the same and when I mounted my old Jensen it was only resting on a 1/4 of lip, T-nuts lined up ok and it's sturdy enough but after all the detailed work I did was kinda bummed.

Don't let that crap freeze up on you!

When my ship comes in I'm going to order a burnt orange suede head and cab and a matching 3 piece suit! How's your tailoring?

I was able to cut down the bottom cleats to allow for 12" speakers! They will fit nicely.

Finished up the baffles, I swapped out the Fender black I had for some Vox, back panels done...this cab is no joke!!! It came out great!
