Really it's not like you have to worry about preamp distortion..I can't get mine to break up!!

I tried everything all the way up on mine (filters off for maximum signal). Still not much break up except the speakers. It was fun to do and the guitar "sang" in a really cool way, but damn my ears rang for a week.
If you want to get it to breakup bypass the filters (you can do it with an alligator clip) Actually kind of cool. Put it on a switch or better yet a footswitch for some rather nice preamp OD..

Dumble SSS sn#001 does break up a lot. The other one I played was very clean sounding.
I would not say all SSS amps are clean only and do not break up.
Just wondering why you think the #001 had a lot of break up? Too much low frequencies (25uf caps on tje dry/wet mix?) lack of LNFB? Or looser GNFB with 100r and 3.3K (compared to a fender 100r with 820r)?
The SSS-150 is not what we have been told. Not sure #005 but the later builds use ether V-1 12AY7/ 6072 or EF86 V-2 EF86 V-3 EL85 V-4 12DW7 V-5 PI ECC82 single
I built a test amp 18 watt V-1 EF86 and just a volume control and a treble cut switch best sounding amp so far.
I can't post a photo still but I have one to prove it help needed.

Interesting info, thanks for sharing.
By later builts do you mean from #007 onwards? As far as I know there are only 11 SSS in existence?

The "Mat" MiniHRM that quite a few of us built had the V1 EF86. It is a very "lively" tube which could easily bloom into feedback at bedroom levels. Great sustain too.
Some care was needed to isolate the tube from speaker vibration using O-rings but it did sound great. I did use an old stock Mullard EF86 though
In fact, I would really like another EF86 amp, now you mention it!

Steve I was just thinking of this post and have a couple of questions.
So the V1, V2 EF86 are wired as triodes and not like the pentode alligator? If V1 is 12AY7 would it be more like a twin tweed (5F8-A)?
Intriguing the 12AU7 on the Pi. Unless it is Ultra Linear like a Marshall Major or if it uses the PI of a VOX AC15, which would make no sense for a clean SRV type sound
Also curious not to see a PI driver or cathode follower. From what I recall all the 150W had PI driver. Also in back pic of SRV SSS it is evident the last tube on the left before the power tubes is taller
