Any interest in seeing some Dumble Tweed Deluxe photos?

Post by Charlie Wilson »

Hello,
I just finished my Low Plate Classic and it sounds great. I really hit this forum pretty hard for information and I thought maybe I should give a little back. Dumble does these amps where you buy a vintage tweed Deluxe, he guts it other than transformers and rebuilds it his way. I had one to look at for awhile and took some pics. If there is interest and I can figure out how to post photos I will let you guys take a look. Thanks all.

Thanks Jelle. This amp sounded great but man it really heated up like a space heater. The customer asked Alexander to make it rock with a Les Paul and that it did.

Looks to be based on 5A3.

Thanks for the pics Charlie.
Just to clarify, is this the actual amp HAD re-built?

Yes Aaron. You go buy a vintage tweed deluxe. In this case, an early fifties version. You give it to Dumble (that is if you know somebody that knows somebody) and this is what he gives you. Oh yeah, he keeps the vintage alnico speaker. He does tweed Champs also.

Looks slightly modded to the 5E3 Deluxe accept split (1K) cathodes on V1, .02 couplers and added 33uf filtering (10K dropper).. Stock tone control..The mystery is in the PI..Looks to have some sort of local feedback loop (33m and .047 Xicon) 10k balance control of some kind?.. Since we can't see the wires under the board and going to the tube sockets..Anyone want to guess as to what's going on there?
Since it's running so hot! and he's stacked three cathode resistors there my gut tells me it's an odd value...So he's probably fine tuned those values for those tubes to run at his magic number,(however hot that is)..It's just a hunch but could be a big part of the secret sauce, since those 5E's sound awesome on the verge of meltdown..A fine tuned Deluxe!!

Hello Tony, the 10k trim pot is a voltage divider on the cathode of the phase invertor. One end goes to the 4.7k resistor that goes to the cathode of the tube at the junction of the 1meg grid resistor. The other end has the 33k and 56k in series to ground. The wiper feeds the signal to the .1 cap. All it does is move the signal up and down the cathode to balance the phase invertor. The large power tube cathode resistors are two 100 ohms and one 50 ohm. Nothing new there. The 3.3m in series with the .002 cap is a negative feedback loop on the plate side of the phase invertor. Probably to control oscillation and maybe roll some high end off. Voltages on power tube plates about 390v. I am letting the cat out of the bag a little but I do know were the wires under the board go.

Thanks! What is the value of the Astron vintage looking cap, and the Mica one on the tone control? Standard 5E3 values?

And do you know the values of the pots?

Hello Jelle, I think the red crayon Astron is the original cap left from the amp! It is a .005 and the mica is 500pf. All the pots are 1 meg.
