Another SSS Build

Post by Aaron »

Here's my take on SSS #02. Still waiting on some parts so no full gut shot yet :P

Looks great Aaron! How big is the chassis - it looks huge!

Thanks, it's the same size as a SSS, BLOODY HUGE!! They're a similar width and height to a Marshall head but deeper.

I had the chassis before I drew up new (and smaller) circuit boards. So my next build will be a bit smaller.

The wiring on the switches looks very clean Aaron. Looks like you spent a lot of time...

What type of resistors are those? Xicon 1W CF??

Hey Aaron,

Very nice! Looks great!

Would love to see a gut shot in the future.

Is that a 2k7 resistor between the high/low filters?

@Smitty - sorry I don't what brand the resistors are. I just order 1w carbon film from the local electronics store. It must have taken me about 45mins for each switch. But was so proud when I finished them :D

@Electron - the gut shot won't be too far away. It's very similar to my Dumbleland. I used a 2k7 between the switches cause Sergio noticed a drop in volume with them and 67Plexi mentioned that SSS 5,6,7,8 used a 2k7.

That is the one marked 270k in the several schematics that have been posted?

@Martin - yes the resistor marked 270k. This is what was mentioned in Sergio's build thread.

First impressions:
1)Great clean sound and a nice reverb. surely this is a totally different machine from an ODS.
2)For my taste the filter section takes away a bit of volume , need tweaks! ( I think to eliminate the 100k res in series to the coil).
3)with accent switch I can omitted the filter section ,so as to feel the difference.
4) I changed the Fet res. divider 220k/8.2k to 150K/9.1k because I had a low volume output.

Replace the 270k resistor with a 2k7 or 2k2 that should do it. The resistor that connects the bass and treble switch. That was the value used on 5,6,7,8 150 watt SSS.
Looks like a fixed bias on the power tubes ???

Looks like Xicon 1w CF to me.

I stand to be corrected it is 270k.

I think 270k should make the filter more effective. With the 2k7 you have much less resistance to ground at the output.

Did you leave the inductor out? I really can't see any use for it.

Hi Martin,

I just wired in an old TDK inductor, it had 582mH stamped on it. I'll try it with the inductor first and hear how it sounds.
I'll have another read through of the SSS thread with the LTSpice files again (for the 100th time), it's too small on the phone.

Also Steve,

I've probably asked you before, and you've probably told me before.

But...... I would really like to see more pictures of that amp :D :D :D

It would be interesting to find out what the inductor sounds like in the circuit vs. shorted out. I ran some sims that show there will be a notch between 3-8 kHz when it's in, depending upon how the switches are set.
