"Twin" power xfmr for 4-EL34

Post by mlp-mx6 »

Folks,

Every "Twin" power xfmr I find lacks sufficient heater current for 4 EL34s and any preamp tubes. The CEDist/AES one only has 5.5A. The Weber one only has 6A (JUST enough for the EL34s, none left for the preamp tubes). Haven't found the ratings for Mercury or Heyboer.

What laydown power xfmr will work SAFELY running 4 EL34?

Thanks,
Michael

That is what is in all the EL34 Dumble amps I've seen.

Keep in mind that the ratings given for the Fender trannies are based on 1960's materials, and modern 1000V wire with modern insulation and such should handle the current.

I can call Alden at heyboer tomorrow and ask him about the ones I have on order.

You can always use a little Hammond Filament tranny for either your pre's or your OT's if you're really worried about it.

You could contact Dave Allen and see if he has any ToneSaver PT's left. He seemed to have spec'd most PTs he uses for EL-34s. Assuming they're Heyboer, he may give you the part number.

I bought a 'super/bassman/bandmaster' replacement TP40 transformer from Dave Allen a while back. The 6.3V winding is rated at 5A. It has these numbers stamped on it:

M1529P2
989 0338

Are those Heyboer numbers?

Yes - that would make sense as I recall the transformers came from Chicago. So are Marvel Electric any good?

I just heard back from Alden, All of the trannies I have on order will have 7A filament taps, do you want me to get you an extra? it also has an addl 6.3v@350mA to run the relays.

They are like $90 + S&h to me, then to you.

FYI Hammond filament transformers are like $15

Thanks - I think that approach will certainly make more sense ($$). Looking forward to the new chassis run!

If you already have a PT then the little filament trannie is the way to go, you can use a small one for just your preamp tubes and have them on a separate DC circuit if you want.

If you don't already have a PT then the All in one will end up being cheaper.

Lemme know if you need me to get you one of those Hammonds (I get them at/near cost)

I have the PERFECT power xfmr for this app, except that it is a standup guy, not a laydown guy. I may try to rig up a plate over that hole so I can use this one. We'll see. Thanks.

Anyone have some "scrap" 1/8" thick aluminum to cover that hole?

Why not just change the Bells?

I would need longer screws to convert it to a Z-mount, and the only time I ever tried to change the screws in a xfmr I found that they did NOT want to come out, and I thought I would be ruining the xfmr. How difficult is it to change this? FYI- the xfmr is a NOS Stancor.
