Monkeymatic ODS #183

Post by xtian »

I was not planning to build an ODS, but user snuffy offered a beautiful head cab with Vox cloth and CE chassis, and I couldn't resist.

I opted for the #183 circuit, because it seemed well documented, and, well, I don't know what I don't know. I used ClassicTone iron, Colossal's excellent 5v PSU and relay units, and an assortment of parts on hand.

Lou (JazzGuitarGimp) made an extremely cool precision power supply board for this project, with rectifier and bias components on the same board. Great design, easy to wire up, and perfectly implemented. That saved space on the wall for the Hammond filament transformer for the switching system--good news, because that Hammond would not fit in the space traditionally occupied.

This project required a lot of squinting at the schematic and layout--some parts (red type on wood background!?!) are illegible. There are a couple of connections missing on the schematic; these issues are documented in the #183 thread.

So I was VERY happy when I had finished wiring, found I had missed only one solder joint, and needed to swap the OT secondaries, but that's it. Everything works GREAT! I have 440v plates, running at about 65% dissipation, showing ~80 watts clean.

Hope you can benefit from the detailed photos of my lead dress choices. This is a TIGHT build, and it's certainly best if you can do the bottom layer and work up, but I certainly had to go back and thread wires thru the weave. Amp is remarkably quiet at idle.

The sound is awesome, and so flexible, with all the tone controls. I'm taking it to play the Friday Night Concert in the city plaza tomorrow night. Rock!

Nice build!
What made you do the power distribution this way?
Also the wiring to and from the master running it close to the tonestack; does it have any pros/cons for you?
Not judging but that wiring is super critical since it is not shielded. Curious about your experiences!

Running B+ to the preamps was the last step in this build, because the Power PCB arrived last. So it was partly an accident of timing. But it pays to think in three dimensions, especially in a build this dense.

I noticed the MV wires are not shielded in the 183. So my wires are tied to the ground buss! The tone stack wires do not get anywhere close to the MV wires. And the Presence wires also are carefully isolated.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone!

Thanks! I LOVE the features on your relay boards--the jumper traces that allow connections on either side of the relay, the extra LED leads, even the socket for the relay (removing the relay made it easier to solder). Wonderful!

T'is fine when planning not works out so very well. Would commend HAD to look carefully through and learn some new things about design.

I wish I could get my amps to look that clean. Thats a real art. How hard is it to silkscreen your logo on there?

Great job!

Man I am really wanting to do an ODS build. Anyone want to buy a set of very lightly used V-Drums so I can afford it?

Not screened. That's a laser-cut plastic badge from http://panelcraftinc.com
