Goop - please correct me if I'm wrong

Post by Mr. dB »

I have an argument with someone who claims that HAD used epoxy to pot the preamp boards in his amps. Didn't he use RTV silicone? This fellow claims that all the amps in the photos with silicone goop were altered by non-authorized personnel. Which of us is out to lunch?

Thanks.

I thought it was silicone car gasket sealant. That's what I'd gleaned from the forum.

Whatever it is I can't imagine having to do a repair on a gooped amp.

It's Permatex gasket sealant, used by HAD.

Even if your friend is correct, I can't recall seeing any amps covered in epoxy. So it would be unlikely that an 'original' epoxy covered amp would not appear on this site.

Also, why would all the non-authorized personnel use the same silicone goop to re-cover the amps?

Your friend has gone out to lunch and not come back!

Cheers,
Paul.

Maybe you should ask your contradictor:

- if some amps gave been gooped in epoxy, they still should be. It's impossible to de-goop, but by using a bath of solvent, which will damage the epoxy-covered components - so where have these amps gone?

Hello, I believe some of the amps were gooped with black silicone originally and regooped with the blue after HAD did some motifications. Maybe that's why he thinks they were epoxied.
