One additional part to this that I just thought of, if the signal goes to ground there, it's also not going through the next stage at all, it resides in that stage, right?

The current stays in that stage (well, most of it does). But the signal still goes on to the next stage as voltage. This voltage then causes current fluxuations in the next stage. So, the signal goes dn. I think Merlin Blencowe's chapter on grounding is excellent. It took a whole lot of the black magick out of grounding amps for me:
