Tweedle D build in progress - looking for suggestions

Post by Rockwell666 »

Hi Folks, chassis is is all assembled, I got my board all drilled out and loaded it with all vintage 1W NOS resistors. I have some NOS mustard caps but I am not sure this is the circuit to use them in.... I am trying to decide on coupling caps ..choices are NOS mullard mustards, Orange drops 715/716, Mallory 150's or SOZO's. opinions?
Tubedepot is currently sold out of F&T 30uf-500V axial caps. worth waiting for the right part or you think I could get away with 2x 47uf and 2x 22uf ?
I got all these ideas to implement into the small 5e3 chassis, i am way ahead of myself....I was thinking of using the ground switch as a diode/tube rectification switch for alittle more modern tones and perhaps even adding a dumble fixed tone stack after the first gain stage, before the volume control for that fat bouncy clean... crazy idea, anyone done this before?

I just built a deluxe and used kemet 32uF caps from mouser.com, they worked great, but ymmv :P as for the coupling caps, I think the 715P are the 'norm' but I'm not an expert, it may be some of the other poly types?

I used all 715P on mine, but they don't match the exact values in some cases, example, the schematic said to use a .005 or .05 I don't recall which, but I could only find .0047 or .0056, so I think I used the .0047 (ignore one zero for whichever it is there lol). effectively, though, to me, the amp I built sounds outstanding! :P

I know its super subjective which coupling caps are used. I reg use Xicon coupling caps and have had no complaints. I forgot about radial filter caps. way cheaper and I can get finished sooner :-)

pics are coming.. I decided I didn't want to deal with the voltage fluctuations and ensuring the bias was correct with a diode/tube rectification switch. I wired the ground switch to the HV Centertap (not that I will use it anyways). used a few different coupling caps, NOS Panasonic polyester caps for the plate couplers and then Mallory 150s for the phase inverter. boards installed, should have fired up by the weekend :-) I used a section of some weird 50's eyelet material board. Seems like fibers laid in some material. works good, got a bunch of it from a friends grandpa. tough as hell and looks the part of being vintage.

I hope it's not conductive.

its not. Ive used it all up on builds and mods. prob made from fiberglass and pcbs haha. Garolite Micarta Linen Phenolic LE Grade Sheet is what it appears to be

All I got left before testing is the heater wiring and PT Primary wiring. The Linen phenolic board is thin, prob a 1/16th of an inch but tough as all hell. I use a tile saw or snips to cut it

Nice build.

The one thing consistent in all dumble builds is his use of 6PS orange drops. They are a huge part of the sound.

I plan to experiment with those later on :-) only a few caps in this circuit.

I built mine with 715P or 716P and love the sound, but maybe I'm nuts :)

I specifically used polyester caps, different then 6PS specs but only a handful of us will even notice

I used 6PS and CDE but the big one was the 1959 OPT 4/8 ohm secondary's

Dumble used 716P in the original.
