So I get a call from Larry Carlton last night........

Post by norburybrook »

what a strange and wonderful world.

So I'm cooking dinner and about to put my spaghetti in the pan and I get a phone call from a friend, I@m with larry Carlton and his amps haven't arrived, let me pass you on to Larry...…………..

LC: Hi it's Larry

me: Hi Larry , how's it going?

LC; Not great...…….

me; er...yes well I'd heard...….

LC: I've tried 6 rental amps and they're all rubbish

me: Yes well rental companies don't care about tone just so long as they work.

LC: so you've got some great amps I hear.

me: Yes, do you want to borrow them?

LC: really?

me: Sure, no problem.

12 hours later............
Larry Carlton-Marcus amp.jpg

quite a proud moment, only made possible by you guys on this forum so I will raise a drink to you all tomorrow when I call in and see Larry and my amp in person :D

  Wow, a proud moment for you! Which one did he use?
You know user Funkalicious? He had a kind of similar experience more than a decade ago. I believe it was the rocketstart for his amp company "Bludotone". I actually heard Larry play it in the Netherlands at a concert. Fabulous sound with his Es335!

that was a soundcheck photo a friend took, he said it sounded amazing. I'll be going to the gig tomorrow so will get Larry's opinion then, and some photos hopefully.

Martin it's this one

it started life as a #124 but I never got on with it and converted it to a#102. It's been my go to amp now for a while, I recorded my album with it and it's the amp I take to most sessions with the Larry Carlton sealed ported EVM cab :D

So does Larry know that he's playing through a "Robben Ford" model?

I did tell him because I Know he's played through Robben's amp before and thought that might at least give him some grounding point. I gave him my #102 and the 100w Bluesmaster. I did ask him if he knew what his Dumble was, but he's got no idea :D I always thought it was a bluesmaster of some kind but he obviously preferred the #102.

Thanks Fred,

it's great testament to TAG, 5 years ago if you'd have relayed that story to me about the future I wouldn't have believed it!

It's also testament to what a bit of hard work, dedication and ambition can do for anyone. I remember getting a few not so nice replies to some of my first posts here from certain members and had I not been determined it could have put me off, but I wasn't going to be stopped, I knew I could eventually learn enough to build an amp as long as I stayed safe, and I proceeded with caution. I'm still learning, which is great and I'm still enjoying the journey.

Life's short people......if not now...when?

It will be a special show. My amps are like my children :D only more numerous and still multiplying!!!

Went to see Larry tonight. He sounded fantastic, the amp bloomed into feedback from time to time, you could see he was really enjoying it. Classic Larry Carlton, couldn't have been prouder

The whole band complimented me on the amp which was nice
