I thought it was done that way because it's a more direct route to cathode Rs & caps, hmmmmm ... guess there's more to it (always learnin', this place is great :D ).

Did you take this picture? Im curious about something.
What was the ground wire on the terminal strip for V1 connected to?
Sorry, I didn't take that picture. I couldn't tell you what the ground lead was connected to.
