Yea, I'd be all over it if it didn't say Dumble on it.

How do you plan to ground? Annodized aluminum is non-conductive.

Right - it's even an insulator

And you can't scratch it off easily like a powder coating or paint.

I typically powder-coat the outside and leave the inside plain with a thin irrodite coating.

I'd love to have annodized, but I can't figure out an easy way to do the ground which is why I ask.

The anodize layer is very thin..can't you dust sand it off or use a drill to open the surface a bit?

You might drill in a hole and then push in a drive-in nut (with the teeth around in a circle), then you've your ground lug terminal

I thought about PEM nuts, but it's best to install before you fold, and if you use something that the Annodizing process won't stick to it'll screw up the chemicals used for annodizing.

If it's a type 1 then it can be scratched off, but it's also softer than paint.

If it's a "Hard" annodize like a type 3 then it typically penetrates the metal about 5 mils, and will be difficult to scrape off.

My Two Rock Ruby chassis kit was anodized. I don't know which anodized type it was. It was a bitch to scrape off. I used a flat bladed screw driver to scrape very hard with the sharp edge and then finished it off with a little sand paper. I then carefully checked for a good clean contact. It worked fine but wasn't cleanly removed and so it looks a bit sloppy for people who care about such things. Just check out a Two Rock build and you will see.
Funk, I really liked working with your powder coated chassis and with bare aluminum on the inside one less hassle, good contact points anywhere I wanted them and it looked better in the end.

With what I do it is impractical for me to have to scrape every ground on every chassis, I need to be able to bolt and go, for DIY I think that works fine.

Do these have the chassis mounting nuts or mounting holes already in them?

A tapped hole should conduct fine.

Grounding on anodize surface

Post by natchanis »

Don't worry about grounding issue. you can use something hard to rub of the surface such as sand paper or screw driver. I build my without consider anodize is not conducted my amp still working fine.

In the long run, aluminum surface may have some oxide if you don't do the powder coting or anodize. Even in the inside of chassis it will have oxide look like white powder in the aluminum surface.
