Very stupid curiosity about trimmer

I ordered Piher trimmers (Mouser # 531-PT15D-10K). They have two wiper
connections and they appear to be "snap in" type. I planned on folding or
clipping one of the wiper legs and use the remaining one just like the
other lugs (PCB style).

Curiosity got the best of me, and I'm wondering what you guys do
or just the purpose of this odd (to me) dual connection...
