Interest in retrofit JM Sig in a Fender Twin Reverb chassis/shell

Post by rccolgan »

Question for ya'll.. Thinking of doing an honest JM Sig DIY project as I did with SSS #002 however I want more customization for builders & "off the shelf" chassis/headshells. Attaching a few mockups using a Fender Twin Reverb chassis/headshell & custom faceplate example. I think I would land on "Fairfield County Signature" instead of "Ryan Colgan Signature". Is this interesting or do you hesitate because it's not a direct copy of the exterior of a Two Rock? Looking for honest feedback since it's a ton of work making the faceplate templates and such.

Hi Ryan,

Nice concept drawings. My only hesitation is the placement of the Gain knob all the way over on the right. Although it is a low gain amp and others have done it, I just don't see the utility in locating it there. However, I did post about that question as surely JM could have anything he wanted in a signature design and was told he put the Gain over where it was (far right) because he would frequently tweak it while playing live. So from that standpoint, that does make sense and not wanting to bump other knobs on the fly.

Great feedback! I see where you're coming from with my own bad experience with the gain pot all the way to the right. My rectifier was a bit noisy and getting in the gain pot!! lol. I'll rejig my Twin Reverb knob layout to see if I can get something that would be minimal chassis modification.

Rearranged the layout a bit for better and using existing Twin Reverb holes and spacing so no panel drilling required! (Again, the goal is to make it easy for someone to buy off-the-shelf chassis and headshells to their visual liking without waiting for a replica chassis run in the For Sale section) I found Apollo spacecraft replica switch guards which would be cool too for full-size DPDT toggles in the stock Fender treb/mid/bass holes. :-) I think I'll give this a try for fun.

Looks good, Ryan. Are you going with the big Showman/Twin head shell? That should put a little more distance between the transformers and reverb pan.

Indeed! Guitar Cabinets Direct is happy to customize a cabinet so I'm thinking of making it 11" or 12" height since I think the stock showman is too tall at 13". My SSS build had no reverb pan hum at 12" height ⚡

That will look sharp. Good to know you had success at 12" in height.

I did what Colossal recommends when I built my JM Sig. I put the gain pot on the far left next to the inputs.
If I ever build another, I'd also loose the toggle switches and one of the Reverb pots (probably the send), hard wiring the toggles internally, but having some reverb send level available on the board.
Always looking to minimize knobbage.
Groovy circuit.
