Help troubleshooting jm/an wonderland build

Post by Matt117 »

Fired it up this morning following rob robinettes start up Procedure and a light bulb limiter. No issues.
Moved into biasing without the light bulb limiter, as I adjusted the bias around half ways on the pot, I got a loud bass rumble. Scared me honestly. Turned it back, and the noise went away. Noticed if I turned the gain, or master off of 0 I got a hum.
Thought maybe OT plate leads needed flipping, tried that and the same hum persists.
-Turning master wide open kills the hum.
-Turning contour up while either master or gain is above 0, increases hum.
-No guitar signal passes through.
-I have proper plate and heater voltages throughout.
-pulling v1 kills hum. (With all other tubes in place)
-pulling v2 kills hum. (With all other tubes in place)
-pulling v5 kills hum. (With all other tubes in place)
-pulling v3 hum.
-pulling v4 hum.
-when taking VDC readings at 22uf filter caps, that would stop
The hum.
-measuring pre amp ground, send jack, grounding lug for center taps and rectifier board, to the iec ground lug all shoes continuity.
Those are the facts I’m working with. Not sure if it’s a ground issue, or signal board in pre amp issue. Tubes seem to all be operating correctly.

Please let me know if you have suggestions and what pictures you’d like to see.

What is that loose wire under the filter cap board in pic#2? That might have been an earlier pic before you attached it but is the first thing I see.

The reverb lead. It’s a short lead from the reverb transformer

Another strange thing I notice when I was poking around with a chop stick, if my hand (ground) got close, not even touching to the 0.1uf and 0.022uf caps connected to the 1megs that are part of the LTPI it cuts the humming. Still no guitar signal passes however.

Simple things to run through - Check your shielded cables aren’t shorting, reflow the filter caps and check they ground where you intend them to, check if bias voltage range is where you’d expect, disconnect contour.

Found it. Forgot to connect the 0.02uf from signal board to the other hot lug of the return jack. Instead had it going to ground. *Facepalm*
