Wouldn't you know it...I smoked the NTE2973 screen supply regulator tonight upon power up 
I was using a mica insulator with some thermal grease, and i suspect a metal shaving landed on the pad and made it the magic smoke release. Im going to replace with a STW15N80K5 and a silicone pad this next go around.
