100w 2nd Gen. ODS build

Post by DSull89 »

Hi again, everybody! Been a while, but I think I’m ready to finally tackle the build I intended to last year. After doing some serious listening I’ve diverged from my previous build choice of #102 and my ears have honed in on the 2nd Gen. ODS ala David Lindley. I have Peavey Deuce iron so I intend to do a 100w version. I found Tony’s 2nd Gen layout for reference and wanted to know if there were any component value differences between the 50w and 100w versions of this amp? I have the steel chassis from the Peavey I might use since I’ll be using all modern components unless a fresh aluminum one will still make or break the build? Looking forward to any and all input!
Thanks,
Dan

Hey Dan,

Other than adding another 2 power tube sockets and different transformers there shouldn't be any component differences.

Good luck!

Kind regards

Depends a bit on which Deuce iron you've got. The PT with the extra 20-0-20 VAC secondaries I like most. You can use that to power the relais with a simple full wave rectifier and LM7812. I believe that PT is from the Deuce or Mace VT. In case you've got the other transformer, you need something else to power the relais. I've got a PCB layout for the VT transformer, so find out what you've got.

Other than that the PT needs a rectifier bridge for the high voltage. The 102 has that IIRC, but you can also use Deuce schematics as guidance.

Thanks for the reply, Ian! Appreciate it! And thank you, rootz! As far as I can tell, my PT doesn’t have the extra taps to supply the relays, I believe this deuce is the earlier mid/late 70’s version. Here’s a pic if that helps.
Thanks,
Dan

Indeed no extra taps to power relays. Then you just use a small filament transformer or something like that. The rest of the conversion is pretty straight forward.

Great! Thanks for the input! I have a transformer I bought when I was planning on building #102. I actually bought a pcb from AA Electronics but I’m not sure it will work for a 2nd Gen. build. Did the circuit layout change much from 2nd generation to 3rd generation on the ODS or was it just the component values within the same format? Here’s a picture of the pcb. Would I just be better off going for the eyelet boards instead?

So I've been working on my BOM for this and wanted to know what diodes I need for the rectifier and relay supply board? (1N4007?) My current BOM has all resistors listed as CF unless noted otherwise in the diagram. If anybody has other recommendations I'd love to hear them. Couldn't link the .docx for some reason so I'll just include the list below.
Thanks,
Dan

I would use uf4007, no real reason for 1n4007 anymore unless you want it vintage correct

Thanks, Ang3lus! I originally wasn’t looking for complete vintage accuracy, but have since decided to pop for the Draloric’s and any other accurate parts I can get since I’ll likely wish I did later. Lol. If the uf’s are better suited, I wouldn’t mind using them instead. Does anybody have recommendations as far as a chassis and boards? I’d ideally like to have the silver chassis with the black print and slider switches. I see most people like the Amplified Nation chassis and boards, any other recommendations would be appreciated. 😊
Thanks,
Dan

Hey Dan, I got a blank chassis from Tube-Town. Not sure where you are based but it was 2-day shipping to the US.

Here is my build of a 3rd Gen (pretty close to a 2nd Gen: https://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=36082

Kind regards

Thanks, Ian! That chassis looks really nice! Strongly considering it! Beautiful build, by the way! Don’t think I’m capable of doing a build as spectacular as yours, but I’ll do my best! Must’ve taken an eternity to track those parts down! Jeez!

Hey everybody, been a little while. I've almost got all my parts together but had a quick question about the boards. I got a steel chassis from Modulus Amplification and I'm gonna have to make my own board templates as the mounting centers are a little weird. (the preamp board mounting centers are 7 3/16" x 2 7/16"). My plan is just to size the boards based on the mounting holes and was wondering if anybody knew what the distance from eyelet to board edge was? Would 1/4" suffice?
Thanks,
Dan

It might be metric.

Hi, Lothy! It is metric, just trying to get some rough measurements so I know how much board material to buy.

I think that would be more than enough. I think I do roughly 3/16
