Skyline tonestack

Post by bmcash »

I am a new to Dumble amps. What in the world does a Skyline tonestack look like? I have searched for images, but I cant find any. All I know is that its supposed to look like city skyline, but I have never seen a actual tonestack nor know where to look.

Thanks in advance for such a noob question

Don't want to sound patronising, but do you know what a tonestack is?

It's just an honest question - we aren't mind readers, we don't know what you know or don't know.

Okay, so the tonestack refers to a typical arrangement in a schematic where the Treble, Middle and Bass are stacked, one on top of the other. A typical arrangment is seen in Fender tonestacks.

In the Bassman tonestack here the elements are RT (treble), RB (bass) and RM (middle). The Skyliner is also a TMB tonestack but with a few refinements.

This page, is useful for modelling the Skyliner tonestack: https://www.guitarscience.net/tsc/dumbl ... V_pot=LogA. You won't find any pictures of a tonestack as such, it is more an idea, which you can draw in a schematic. The Skyliner name, may indeed refer to a city skyline, but you may be confusing it with Heitor Villa-Lobos' 'New York Skyline which is a signature piece of music said to have been inspired by the silhouette of the city skyline against the evening sky. We have to imagine that the Skyline tonestack is a tonal equivalent of that visual impression.

Simply said it's the treble/middle/bass EQ section. Dumble's Skyline tone stack produces a frequency response similar to a Fender Blackface tone stack, but it spreads the useful sweep of the controls over the full rotation. It's also has switchable voicing via the Rock/Jazz and mid-boost switches, as well as a lift (preamp boost, or PAB).
