dumbleator type loop

Post by pedro »

I'm about to add a *umbleator to my hybrid build

should it go directly before the coupling cap into the PI ??

Anyone built a stand alone one with toroidal TXs ?
cheers

Yes, it goes right where the send / return jacks are in the Hybrid/Sky schematics.

Never built a standalone with a toroid tranny, but no reason it should not work.

cheers Gary - I'll attempt to build it on tagstrips surrounding spare 12Ax7 socket for now and see how it goes. Does the B+ voltage matter much - I know I need to add additional filter stage from th epre-amp power supply ?

I have read the dumbleator loop improves the tone even without an effect in it. Gary, do you find that to be the case and how might you describe the difference. How much do you think it contributes to the tone of Robben Ford who I think uses one frequently with his delay unit.

Well I do think it does add a certain quality to the tone. It also adds another bit of potential gain to the amp depending on how you set the controls. Ironically, if you set above send and return levels to 12:00 (assuming audio taper), the gain is virtually unity, at least on the couple that I have built.

If you are trying to emulate Robben tone, then you will need the D-lator, probably external with the right cables and a TC-2290 effects unit. I remember reading once that Robben's patch cable of choice were those old gray Radio Shack 6' 1/4 to 1/4's. They add a bit (or a lot) of capacitance to the signal chain which will cut the highs accordingly.

Now back to the first question, does it improve the tone, Oh Yeah!!. I need to build one for my personal amp. The two I have built have new homes now :). Of course this is my personal opinion and YMMV.

Gary,
do you have a suitable loop layout already worked up ?

I have been playing about with tagstrip layouts around the tibe socket toinight but cant find a neat solution. I may just build an eyelet board or turret board and install somewhere in the chassis.

Mine is not neat. I just crammed it in there (carefully) and haven't looked back. No, I won't post a picture 'cause it looks scary in there.
