Clips of my HRM in the Funk chassis

Post by Bob-I »

I'm a little dissapointed in the recording. I've tried 3 different mikes and settled on a cheepy MXL condensor. The cleans are great, but the OD sounds a bit brittle compared to the amp live.

I used my 22 fret PRS direct into the amp into a 2x12 with a Emi Tonker and Swamp Thang. There's a little delay on the mixer.

Enjoy

Harmonically rich and very tasty tone. Great job Bob. What was you signal chain beside the mxl mic? Did you use a tube mic preamp?
Great things happen in a vacuum

The mic is directly into an Alesis firewire mixer. No preamp.

88 views and one comment. Must be worse recording than I thought.

Just listened to it. I liked it and I hear some of my amp on it.
Then again, I'm not all that happy with my amp so I guess I'm
on the fence.

Both clips sound much more like what I'd expect from a Marshall
than a Dumble. I know that's what it's supposed to sound like
I didn't like the recording of clip #2. Clip #1 is much better IMO.

Are those with PAB on? I'm assuming it is.

a few things that made my amp better (per this forum's recommendations):
250k treble trimmer (measuring high ~260k, mine's 258k)
25k middle trimmer instead of small tail resistor
.05uF on the CL2 coupling cap (I had .02uF with 6L6 but this was too thin).
This cap change made a HUGE difference in quality of tone.

My amp is close or equal to ODS-101 HRM. 50w with 6L6.

On both clips I switched the PAB on about half way through.

All already in place.

One thing that's affecting my tone is tubes. I have chinese 6L6's that I use to test amps. I'm waiting on a tube order. Also the preamp tubes are not ideal. I have an EH12AX7 that I never liked much in V1 and sovtek 12AX7LPS in V2 and V3. I like the LPS in V3 but not in V2.

Hey Bob,

Nice chops 8)

I like the responsiveness of the gain in the second clip.

I hear what you mean about the compression. Every clip I've tried makes my amps sound terrible compared to their room sound. You have to move the mic around until your clip sounds like the amp in the room. You might wind up with the mic a few inches from the front of the speaker, but up to a foot or two left or right. This is advise from very trusted friends in the know. Sadly, I don't have the time or patience to try this myself.

BTW, I sent you an email today.

Nice playing Bob. Sounds like you've got yourself a keeper there. I'm even more jealous I can't get a Funk chassis and boards  Even though you are unhappy with the recording you can tell it's got the sticks.

How about some more when you get your new glass?

I replaced the preamp tubes, not I have a Tung-Sol in V1 and another EH in V2. The improvement is fairly dramatic, but still not 100%. I upped OD1 coupler from .002 to .004 by putting another .002 in parallel. I then adjusted the dropping string by lowering the 22K to 11K again parallel another 22K. Now the voltages on V1 are up to 190 from 170 and the amp is tighter and more dynamic.

I'll try to record some clips tomorrow. Soon I'll be getting some Tung Sol 6L6 GC STR's to try. I've tried some JJ KT77's and didn't like them in this amp.
