Zendrive pedal

Post by dogears »

Since bluesy brought up the Zendrive in another thread, I thought I'd make a seperate thread regarding it.

I have Alf's Zendrive prototype and it I was blown away the first time I plugged it in.... To me, it sounds better than many of the clones on the market. It may not have as clear a top end as the real amps, but it makes up for it with an amazing lowmid voicing!

Here are the clips I posted to the other thread. Just quickly recorded, dry, SM57 close miced. Fuchs clean channel no gain.

Sometimes I wonder why bother with all the amp stuff when this pedal into a nice Fender kicks ass. Robben clearly thinks the same!!!

What I'd really like to do is create a preamp that we can use in a Fender style amp.

Any thoughts?

I'm not qualified to discuss tone stacks, pre-this and post-that but exactly what is it that might make a pedal like the Zendrive act like it does tonally with an amp? Are some of the electronic parts in the pedal comparative to some of the parts in the amps you genius's are building/tweaking? I know that has to sound goofy to you electronic types- but if something like the Zendrive were built inside an amp head- with the knobs obviously on the outside-...... I dunno, might seem like a really special head to a lot of people.
Something like a "built-in pedal" might be more easilier(?) tweakable than fretting over transformers, lead dress(not that I know what that is) which components are better sounding, etc. Please humor me a little. I'd love to have that juju tone! Comments?

Dogears----yipes! Very inspiring stuff. I'm not as adept playing-wise, but I sure would like to plug into some of those amps and see how they FEEL.

Head over to: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/ and search the "effects, pedals, strings & things" section. Lots of interesting talk.

For those not familiar with these here's the link. Plan to wait for yours though, they're commonly backordered 60 days from what I've heard.

When I saw Robben Ford with John Mayall he was playing through a Super Reverb re-issue <gasp> using a Zendrive and it sounded great. My only complaint was that he really cranked up the highs.

I was kinda thinking of something along the lines of Doug Hoffman's tube pedal project.

Making some mods to "Dumble-ize" the gain structure and tone stack I think we could come up with something nice. I have the start of the ckt done on a turret board. Give me a few more months and I'll actually have something working.
