Tubes for ODS

Post by Karl »

My ODS clone is finally coming together. I will post pictures when it's finished.

What tubes should I buy both for the power and preamp?

I play mostly John Mayerish type of music. The amp has 100k plates and 10uF/1500.

Larry Carlton uses Sovtek 5881's and JJ ECC83s fwiw-

Robbens amps had JJ preamps, one had the 5881 output tubes, one had either Svetlana's (Reflektor prod.) or winged C's, I couldn't see any manufacturer label-but they did have orange GT stamps on them.

You do need to experiment.
I use a Sovtek 12AX7 / ECC83 LPS in V1 and JJ ECC83's in V2 and V3
Sovtek 5881's for power tubes.
Still experimenting a bit
A lot of peiople seem to like the SED Wined C power tubes, but they were not for me (to direct). I guess It a matter of finding the right combination for your amp.

Awhile ago I bought a bunch of Chinese 6L6's to use on the bench for testing new amps. After testing a variety of output tubes, Sovtek 5881, Tad's, JJ's, Tung-Sol, etc, I've gone back to the Chinese tubes in 2 of my amps. They simply sound the best to me, and the best part, they're cheep.

+1 on the Chinese, the only downside is consistancy but if they make it through 8 hours of use it seems they're good for the long haul. The reason I don't use them in 50 watt builds is it's rare to find a pair of them that have "late" distortion and I'm ususally going for maximum clean headroom.

I like the later generation Chinese 12ax7 in V2.
For V1 I have a NOS Sylvania.

For power tubes I am having very good luck with SED Winged=C= 6L6.

Chinese 6L6GC

Post by David Root »

Bob-I, heistl, would those Chinese 6L6s be Shuguang, brown base, gray plates, a pair of D-getters top and bottom?

I hope so, I have 5 pairs I got about 5 years ago. I heard they're no longer in production.

Jeez, you're gonna make me open my amp up?

I didn't pay that much attention, but they're less than 5 years old so I doubt it. I'm pretty sure they have a brown base, but I don't remember the plate color or the getters.

All the Chinese 6l6 ones I've tried in the last 2 years have black bases.

I had a set of Ruby 6L6 tubes in one of my amps. Shitola..... Next to JJ 6L6 on the crapmeter.

Put in Tung Sol 6L6 short bottles and all was 100% better. Same goes for the Winged C. Also good.
