I see that one of the winterlands reportedly had a dynaco A451, perhaps this OT (2k2 z) was also used on SSSs?

That would not surprise me. That is a monster OT.

Regarding the drivers, those of us, like me, who are not "in the know" will probably have to just try various driver tubes (12AX7, 12AT7, 6/12FQ7, 12AU7, 12BH7) until we get what sounds right. The 12BH7 sounds like it is worth a try for SRV tone.

Also, there are industrial variants of the 12AT7 with longer plates that come in 12BH7 size tubes, maybe three slightly different types that could be worthy of research. E180CC/7062, 6414, 6829.

I was considering puting a PI Driver Tube in my Classic/Bluesmaster Bassman 100 build but didn't know where to start.

I just saw an amp on EBAY the other day that Any Fuchs built, it had the PI driver tube in an ODS mod 100w Fender amp.

Adding a cathode follower like a super twin works well. Longhorn amps in Texas does this (not DC coupled) and it adds some clarity and girth to an amp. I do it differently (more like an SVT or an SSS), which has it's advantages too, but makes the power supplies much more complex.

Thanks Andy,

Adding the Driver tube makes the amp have much more clean headroom right?

It can slightly reduce blocking distortion so the amp does stay cleaner longer before getting hair on it. It also tightens bass, and seems to add more articulation, not more highs as much as more clarity.

About Sterling and Custom Clean (SSS clones)

Post by bluescaster »

I found pictures of Two Rock Sterling and Custom Clean insides that supposed to be SSS clones. The Custom Clean preamp is hide under the board but we can see that Sterling and Custom Clean have the same layout. Custom clean manual indicate:
V1 clean preamp
V2 Reverb send and return
V3 Reverb driver
V4 Reverb/Clean mix
V5 Phase inverter
V6 to V9 6L6
3 tubes for reverb but no special PI. The preamp seem to be just like any ODS clean preamp.
We can see that the 2 preamp stages have local feedback loop.
There is 2 stranges components in preamp like trim pots or inductors ?
Treb cut and bass cut have 7 positions and seems to be just RC or CR filters that can be emmulate with a equalizer stompbox in loop effects.
I found a mp3 file on another forum where a guy try a Sterling and it get that famous SRV kind of tone (clean with grit full of harmonics).

So, ODS clean preamp with LNFB, reverb, filter, PI and PP. That's all ?

"That's all" maybe in the case of the TR, but then it's apparently NOT an SSS clone, as they all (to my knowledge) have the cathode follower driver for the power tubes....which is a big part of what makes them sound so huge.
