I did this mod over the weekend

Post by cpollack »

I own a 1981 RD50 and had a similar experience with the OD channel over the years. It was nearly OK during the grunge era, but....

Anyway, I had the parts in my junk box and decided to crack the amp open saturday and solder them in. I did the mod pretty much as written, but I removed C9 and replaced it with the 150K series grid resistor and removed R14, making the layout on the PCB a bit more tidy.

I plugged it in, checked for lack of smoke, and wailed away with my LP Jr. I must say that I was pretty geeked. I can't say that it sounds like a *umble, but it does some *umble things. The clarity with everything up full is pretty cool. The mod seems to get rid of some of the nasty stock IM distortion, allowing even open chords to sound pretty articulate, and the sustain is decent as well with notes holding their character as they decay.

I need to suss it out further, but so far, so good. This one's a keeper.

Does anyone have the stock RD-50 circuit board they would care to part with? I am restoring mine with some additional mods of my own and would like to have some stock boards that I do my own take on modding without punching holes and adding tubes.

Here's my reverb mod:

My Limit channel mod:

(Weber MASS Load and Palmer PDI-09 for direct recording).
