Rebuild of my clone combo.

Post by glasman »

I spent a few days rebuilding by personnel clone (one of funks chassis). Did the whole enchilada, new power supply board and uber cool formica main baord with sandwich construction. I am really happy how it turned out.

Maybe I should add some scrapped off blue silicon seal...

The circuit is a Bluemaster style.

Yes nice build!

Now as a reward a dumb question:  :D

What's "sandwich construction" about?
What are the benefits? only just noticed it on Funks pictures.
Thought it only applied to the non-rigid fiber boards in old Fenders :?:

Thanks Jelle,

That board is kinda cool and must account for the tone :).

I used to use that purple gepco coax, but once I got a lead on good teflon coax I had to make the switch, I like to be able solder the shield right to the pots.

I am pretty jazzed with the BM tone. At first I missed the thick mids, but that soon waned. Nice to have another tone in the arsenal of stuff.

I really think there is something to that power supply.

FWIW, my supplie voltages were.

460 plates
455 Screens
438 PI
336 OD
300 CL

The real dumbles alway used a backboard to hold the wires in place. Probably not a bad idea as the formica is pretty thin and not so rigid.

Thanks for the comments on the build.

Hey Mr Funk.

We both have to say thanks to Mr S. for the cool as hell board. Now would I build my own amps like that... no. It really is fragile.

I even went as far as rotating the 9 pin sockets and I will say that have pin 1 to the back does make the wiring seem cleaner.

As far as the cable, no that is some stuff that Gil helped me find at Apex electronics in LA. I had to bribe Gil with lunch to get him to go into Apex (it is a bit dirty in places) but it was also fun to shop in the same place that Mr. D shops.

It is some military surplus with an 18ga center conductor and about 28pf / foot. As soon as it is depleted I will try the stuff from Weico.

That sounds very nice, Normster! What is your PAB scheme? Reason I ask is the boost seems to makea the sound a bit honky (through my PC speakers), while the clean and OD are simply great IMHO.

I do remember the memorable Saturday afternoon, Apex was dirtier than ever on that day! And then we went to the Cheescake Factiory, if I recall correctly? When the cable stock depletes, you have to come back to L.A. to get some more. ;)

I still have some of that cable and I truly think it's about as good as it gets. In some of the old amps, I replaced the OD pots many times, punishing the teflon cable wildly when soldering to the pot cases. Yet, I never had to repalce a single one of them!

Yup, it was the cheescake factory, I think the little cheesecake that was serving us was pretty nice as I remember. That was a fun day.

I will definately be back to Apex again in the future to root around for more cable. I just wished that I had bought a bunch of the colored teflon wire they had sitting on the shelfs.

That is a sweet looking build! What is the black on the ends of some of the caps? Outer foil designation?
