New ODS build with pictures

Post by airniles »

I am building a new ODS based on the Ceriatone ODS 100W parts and the frame from Natchanis.

I decided to replace the tolex from the Ceriatone cabinet, because the original ODS tolex is thicker than the Ceriatone version.
Also the holes in the cabinet didn't fit the Natchanis frame.

These are the pictures so far.

Thats great, really nice work!

One thing that I was considering on my Ceriatone Cabinet (if I had also re-Tolexed it) was to enlarge the cutout on the top, over the controls. The real one had more of a cutout.

cabinet edge

Post by airniles »

Thanks!

Ok, I didn't noticed the diference in the edge of the Ceriatone and the real ODS.....
Mabye I wil try to correct it later, if possible.

How did you fit your frame inside the Ceriatone cabinet? since the holes are only fitting the Ceriatone frame.
Also the Fender amp handle was not fitting the holes from the cabinet.
That was the main reason why I did the retolex job.

I had asked Nik for a special cabinet with no chassis mounting holes. It did take 4 extra weeks of waiting. I was lucky on the amp handle as it just covered the existing holes.

Where did you manage to get hold of the 4 screw handles, since Ernie Ball are no longer supplying the originals?

Also, if either of you can spare a few moments, could you post the measurements of the head box, or if you know of any threads that already have them posted, I'd really appreciate it.

Cheers. :D

measurements cabinet

Post by airniles »

No problem!

The handle is an original Fender replacement handle, not the original Ernie Ball unfortunately...
You can get these Fender replacement handles at www.tubedoctor.com or any other amp-parts supplier.
Fender P.N. 0990948000 (Mr. GEARHEAD)

The cabinet measurements (excluding tolex thicknes) are as follows:

multiplex wood 1,8cm thick
measured inside 50cm wide x 22cm high
measured outside 26,5cm deep
back panel 49,6cm wide x 15cm high x 0,8cm thick multiplex wood
support frame for back panel made of 1,8cm x 1,8cm wood
2 x 14,5cm
1 x 50cm
front panel 49cm wide x 12cm high (is smaller because the white piping has to fit around)
small front beam 1,8cm thick multiplex
49,8cm wide x 2,5cm deep
4 mm thick Alumunimum strip on top of the small front beam
2,5cm deep x 49,8cm wide

Hope this helps.
Please let me know if you need more measurements.

Cheers

Finally finished the amp!

Post by airniles »

One month ago I finished the amp!
I now finally have the time to upload the images.....

I managed to get hold of all the #124 components and changed them where necessary for the Ceriatone components.

I fully wired the amp with Teflon wire and I think I found the same coax wire HWD used (found at my work).

I fired the amp up and .......it sound's amazing!!!!
I tried several speakers from friends and I prefer the EVM speaker, but the Celestions sound great too!
I am building a speaker cabinet at the moment (pictures will follow soon).

No, I followed the exact values of the #124 schematic.
Including the tone caps like 300pf, 500pf etc.

I did it mainly because #124 was probable made for a Strat and I have a Strat as well.
And like ic-racer did, I decided to use the #124 values as a good start.
And I must say it sounds great!

Several well known guitarists here in the Netherlands (Peter Tiehuis etc.) have tried my amp and they where impressed.
But of cours, I am allways searching for improvements.

At the moment everyone is talking about the HRM mod, can you or enyone tell me; what is the difference tone wise?

You missed the 15pf bright cap on the master. Makes a huge difference, IMHO.

HRM amps are built that way from ground up..... I know of no mod. You really have to plan it that way from scratch.

Thanks you have it right, but the 15pf bright cap on the master is soldered in.
This photo was taken at a nearly finished state ( I will update the picture soon )!

For the ceramic caps 15pf, 250pf, 270pf, 300pf and 500pf I had to buy a large number of components, so if enyone needs a set of these caps I can send them to you.
Please let me know.

Nice!

Soon mine will be one year old and I am still very happy with the standard 124 values.

Yes, I am also very happy at the moment with the sound of the #124 components!

I must say that your story motivated me to build my current amp!
Thanks a lot!!

Which speakers do you use for the #124?

Are you building a HRM version at he moment?
Have you any idea about the sound difference between the #124 and the HRM version?

Greetings,

since there are a number of schematics and layouts on this portal that are named ¨standard 0124¨, could you point to the link on this forum, files section perhaps, to indicate exactly which is THE standard 0124 schematics and layout you refer. Both schem. and layout, kindly. Provode the exact link to, and/or drawings. Thanks.

This might be a dumb question, but where did you get your chassis? I am new to the dumble side of this forum and I am thinking about starting a build.
