Is the black coax from the input jack still connected to the board then jumpered to the wiper of the pot?

Are you asking about the pot on the chassis floor?
Maybe that is for the FET gain?

what is throwing me is the thick black wire looping over from the input jacks.

It looks to me like the silver or white coax is going to the fet inputs like normal running under the circuit board. Then coax jumpers from the board to the pot in the floor, offering external adjustment. but i'm not following exactly where the thick black cable is tying into the circuit. It doesn't look like it goes to the wiper arm of the pot yet if it goes to the fet board why did it loop over the circuit board to make a path longer then needed?

I guess before i get to involved in this... is it even a useful mod?

I believe the black coax coming over the board is the normal input going to V1. It appears to be stripped back so that it changes from black (sheath) to white (core) right under the cross wires. There is a second piece of black coax going from the FET board to the pot that crosses right over the first piece.
