D-Lite Convertible EL84/6V6 with integr. Dumbleator

Post by schorsch »

hi folks!

i thaught it's time to give something back to the nice people in this forum here from which i got so much supply and informations. Thanks a lot at this point!

...so here's my personal variation of the d-lite:

It's my 5th custom built amp now, which i started by dismantling a homebrew marshall 18 watt clone, took out the transformers and other parts still useable, and put the whole stuff in a standard Hammond-Chassis. (The 18Watt Marshall-Clone was nice sounding too, but due to the amp-design, distortion only works at higher volumes. I often play at home at lower volumes, so it really wasn't the right amp for my needs. The other reason was, that i didn't have the money for completely new parts...so i sacrificed the Marshall-Clone...)

The transformers, the chassis and most of the parts, i got from a german tube-specialist "www.tubetown.de", which has a good sorted web-shop and affordable prices. The PT is a Torodial 106VA transformer, the OT is a Marshall 18 Watt/1974x.

I didn't wanted to resign the EL84's from the marshall-clone, because i really love their sound, but i also like the warmth of 6V6's, so i thought it would be a nice feature to have a switchable power stage - EL84's selfbias / 6V6 fixed bias - without the need of sticking tubes inside out.

Another point was the fx-loop. I decided to integrate the standard dumbleator with a bypass-switch to took it out if i want.

So here it is: D-Lite convertible - EL84 selfbias / 6V6 fixed bias - with integrated switchable Dumbleator.

Construction is tested and the amp works fine since 3 months now. It's a very versatile amp and good sounding too!

There's definately a tonal difference between EL84's and 6V6's and it was really worth to try this thing out. Hard to say what i like more - i like both - in every mode - clean and distorted.

Schematic, layout and some pictures of the amp you find in the attachments.
Feel free to use them, if you want.

Merry Christmas to all forum members!

George

Very clever! :D

And nice build.

Have you heard of the new Egnater Rebel 20 amp?

It has EL84 and 6V6 but has a blend control that you can rotate to one or the other or a combination of both.

I wonder how that would be implemented?

Hi Tom!

Thanks for the flowers!

I've never had the chance to hear or test one of the Egnater amps. They should be pretty hard to get here in germany, but i suppose he's running the power-stages in parallel, using a OT with lower prim. impedance around 5k, and then blends the input-signal between EL84 and 6V6 with a kind of stereo-balance-pot after the PI. Another option would be using 2 seperate PI's (maybe cathodyne) and blend the input signal in front of them.

In any case it's an interesting little amp! Have you already heard one?

I have a Mesa Blue Angel that has both 6V6 and EL84 tubes; it uses a rotary switch to switch the cathodes on or off. Problem is the 6V6's have a higher drive requirement; you really can't hear them in the mix.

Dual PI's with a blend control seems like a better idea

I've never intended to use EL84's and 6V6 at the same time. The use of a 106VA PT and a OT with around 10k prim. even forced me to install a relais for the heaters of the power tubes. So when 6V6's are active, EL84's are shut off, and vice versa.

btw. i've updated the posted schematic, which now contains the heater relais for the power tubes.

Since this thread is from 2008/2009, and the OP hasn't logged on since then, from what I can see, I highly suspect they won't respond. It's often best to assume that old of a thread is going to be a non starter...
