Re: Dumble 2x12 cab
Thanks Chris.
I'm thinking that is Oxblood grill cloth but the stuff without the silver or gold threads.
My head cab is rough blond with a black grill.

No, I wish I had that kind of cab making skills.bluesfendermanblues wrote:Beautifull head Tom, is that really home made?Structo wrote:Thanks Chris.

This cab was made by Anthony at Reason Amps, apparently Brown Note had several cab makers do their cabs for them.
I'd love to make a matching 2 x 12 with oval port for it.

how thick should the cabinet be? "wood thickness" 5/8"
seems you can still track down lumber-core.

Re: Dumble 2x12 cab
FWIW, I have never used finger joints for speaker or head cabs. I use simple butt joints. Glue the butt joined edges, using a clamp, then countersink wood screws, before the glue dries. The joint is as strong as the wood and countersinking allows the router to shape the edges. I then fill the countersink holes with wood filler, then sand smooth. It doesn't look as nice as a finger joint but the tolex covers it anyway. My main tools for cab building are a circular saw (w/ fine tooth blade), a router, and a jig saw for cutting the speaker holes and jack panels.

By all accounts - 3/4"selloutrr wrote:how thick should the cabinet be? "wood thickness" 5/8"...

3/4" is what I used as well. Solid as a rock. Almost as heavy as a rock though
Re: Dumble 2x12 cab
So is that actual wood between the laminates?selloutrr wrote:how thick should the cabinet be? "wood thickness" 5/8"

Or a man made fiber board?

Re: Dumble 2x12 cab
I could be wrong I'm not a lumber guy but my understanding is that it's a laminate top bottom over solid wood strips like if you make a cutting board in shop class
They also make a fiber board version

Re: Dumble 2x12 cab
Yup Tom, it's solid wood strips glued into a panel and veneered on both sides with thin "plies". Imagine if you will - Take a piece of ordinary run of the mill birch plywood. Now grab one corner of the very top layer and peel it off the rest, repeat on the other side. Now go into your living room with your circular saw and cut the appropriate size piece out of the middle of your hard wood floor and sandwich that with the previously acquired veneer sheets. Viola! DIY lumbercore.
In reality though, the only reason I used it was because I had enough and got it for free. I don't doubt that the cab sounds just as good made from standard issue sheet goods.
Have Fun,
Dan

Hopefully lumber core glued strips have no knot holes or voids.

Ordered a vertical D-cab from Tube Town instead of having one made to these specs...

Re: Dumble 2x12 cab
Had to show this off...
Finally finished school last week so I got the time to complete my cab. All that is left is drilling a hole for the jack plate on the back. I have the jack plate on order along with amp parts for the next build. Just use a forstner bit to drill the back panel out a bit, should be simple.
Cab is very robust and very heavy. Quite pleased how it turned out though. I like the way the rough blonde tolex, oxblood grill cloth and white pipping all work together.

^found some nice 12AWG speaker wire locally at one of my favorite elec surplus places. $1 a foot. Seems like very good stuff, should take 100W of power fine.

Re: Dumble 2x12 cab
Looks great! Where did you end up getting the grill cloth?
Re: Dumble 2x12 cab
Ended up getting it from Steamco Music Supply (I think that's it). It's a Canadian place, price wasn't bad and shipping was good. Not a whole lot of selection but they had what I needed.
