The port hole on the black set up is large enough to change the speakers without popping off the back panel....isn't it!

Is it but to get a screwdriver inside is a tight fit. Screw don't go very deep though so it works.

I would remove the back panel for changing speakers.
You don't want to add to the risk of perforating a cone or some other mishap to damage a speaker, speakers are so expensive these days that I like to remove as much risk to damage as I can.

I wonder how close that speaker cab is to the Dumble one like Robben Ford uses?
Here is a picture of it that somebody from here put their best guesstimate of dimensions on.

Does anyone put batting inside an open back speaker cab? Is it needed? I don't see any in the pictures?

generally no. Not to say someone somewhere doesn't do... but... what's the point?

The reason for the batting is to "tune" or take up space in a sealed enclosure. once you remove the seal and add open air flow you also remove the need to control the box volume.

Also I believe the polyfil type stuffing can make a closed cab think it is bigger in volume than it really is.
It can change the bass response in speaker cabs.

I have added polyfil to smaller bookshelf speakers before and it made them sound better.

That's true. I was able to tame a little high end by varying the amount of batting in this Theil cab I built a couple years ago

Finally finished school last week so I got the time to complete my cab. All that is left is drilling a hole for the jack plate on the back. I have the jack plate on order along with amp parts for the next build. Just use a forstner bit to drill the back panel out a bit, should be simple.

Cab is very robust and very heavy. Quite pleased how it turned out though. I like the way the rough blonde tolex, oxblood grill cloth and white pipping all work together.

^found some nice 12AWG speaker wire locally at one of my favorite elec surplus places. $1 a foot. Seems like very good stuff, should take 100W of power fine.

Chris, How far in from the front edge of cab did you set the baffle board?

If so do you have a EVM 12L in it?

How do you like it with your new Dumble amp?

Right now I have a 16 ohm Alnico Tone Tubby in there, it was a little smoother when playing the d'lite, than the EV12L. I'm going to try the EV in there soon, I'll let you know when I do.

From the cabs edge to the grill cloth it is 1/2" (bit less at the baffle edges with piping). So I guess the cleats are set back about 1" and a bit from the edge cause the baffle board if 1/2" baltic birch.

EDIT: Uploaded a corrected version. The copy at the top of the image incorrectly identified the depth of the cabinet as 12 1/2" which conflicted with the correctly scaled drawing which indicates 12 1/4".

Hi folks, As originally promised ages ago ... here are a couple of picks of my completed 2x12 (and amp).
Cab is loaded with two 50 Watt, 8ohm, Eminence Cannabis Rex speakers , wired in parallel. Covered in truck bed liner paint instead of vinyl.
