ok maybe not, but i hope that got your attention anyway...
Thanks to my little junkyard build - http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... ght=#64950 - working out so well, i HAD to expand on the idea a bit. with the success of the junkie mutt and its 6sj7 preamp, i'm pretty much set on using a pentode in everything i build now!
so this is... the evolution of the ihmuke, i'd say. hopefully the be-all end-all of mildly crunchy to searingly overdriven lead tones. i'd love your comments and feedback on this very, very irreverent take on the trainwreck. output tubes... can't decide between EL84s and 6V6. will figure that out later.
do let me know if you see anything nasty in there. thanks for stopping by!

Whats up with D1 and R30 on the inverter?

It's supposed to prevent grid flash-over at turn-on in a DC coupled cathode follower. Once it reaches it's intended operating point the diode becomes reverse biased and is out of the circuit. Old trick used in DC amplifiers in oscilloscopes of yesteryears.Andy Le Blanc wrote:Whats up with D1 and R30 on the inverter?
There's a pretty detailed analysis of this in Merlins book.

OH..... I see, ok..... I hadn't seen that yet.... I look through mostly older reference. (real old)
Made an assumption about the inverter too.....
Merlin's book?, got an ISBN #

Antique / Tubes and more has the book. Picked it up over the holidays but have not had time to read yet...Andy Le Blanc wrote: Merlin's book?, got an ISBN #

yep, spotted correctly - i lifted the cathodyne PI verbatim from the valve wizard pages and figured this little detail couldn't hurt... i've never done a cathodyne PI before, something tells me the plate and cathode resistors might be a bit off for 12AT7 or 5751. might have to redimension that...
any other comments? this build is at least 4 weeks off, so we have all the time in the world to discuss and come up with mods for this one. i need to have a bunch of chassis custom bent and cut (no workshop or tools of my own) and need a bulk order for that. so working on my CAD layouts for the same over the next couple of weeks - am ordering 4-8 chassis together.

R3 could be larger, 180k to 330k, but as long as there is balance the value of the inverters resistors can be to taste.

would the balance pot work as shown (biasing unmatched tubes)? there will be a separate pot for dialing in the right -ve voltage on the power supply board. getting matched tubes here is a pain as well so i feel the need to improvise. i'm also worried that the value may be a bit too high, or that perhaps a separate pot per tube would solve the issue better.
does anyone have a schematic showing separate bias pots for each output tube? i'Ve seen this feature on at least 2 amps, a brunetti and something else, where each of the 4 EL34s had it's own bias pot and digital display.
