Cutting speaker holes?

Post by Bob-I »

I've never been able to do this with a jigsaw. What are people using to speaker holes in the baffle?

Yup. Loren built his own from 1/4" plywood. The router works great if you do it in 3-4 passes rather than try to cut through on the first pass.

I use a Dewalt zip saw with a circle cutting attachment, the trick is to go slow let the bit do the work

I built a jig today out of 3/8" ply wood. Worked great with a 1/8" spiral bit in the router, 3 cuts and I have a perfect circle. Now if only I could work a ruler the speaker would actually fit  I'm 1/16" too small so I rounded over the edge and the speaker can be front mounted now.

I also drilled a hole for 6" holes so I could make the oval cutout on the back. That went much better. I cut the 2 1/2 circles and connected with with a hand held circular saw, then rounded over the edges.

Thx everyone, I have my method. Now someone teach me to read a ruler.

After reading this post yesterday, I made the simple circle cutter with plywood, and used my el cheapo Harbor Freight trim router to cut a hole for 12 inch speaker in 5E3 cab. It worked great, like 1/8 deep per pass with the 1/4 inch bit.

I use a 3/4" bit in my 1/2" router. 2 passes for 3/4" MDF. Works well.
