Storing Components in an Organized Way?

Post by The New Steve H »

What's the best way to store random components so you can get your hands on them fast? I was thinking of getting a couple of portable file boxes. I know they're made for paper, but electronic components are pretty small, so I think it could work.
Relax. It's SUPPOSED to smoke a little.

A fishing tackle box works great, or they have plastic organizers with sliding drawers at Home Depot and the like.

This is something I ran across some time ago, I believe it is shear genius.

I want to build one myself when I get a house with a basement.

I want to keep this small for now. Otherwise I'd want a huge cabinet.

I use gobs of something similar to these:

http://www.amazon.com/Plano-23700-01-St ... m_sbs_hg_5

It is easy to have one for jacks, one for LED's, one for rectifiers, SS components, one for power resistors etc, one for switches etc.

I also use something like this for resistors and caps, one section for each value:

http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/plano-stow ... 45064.aspx

I like the clear containers because I can see quickly what is in them, I also stick the packing label for that component in the bottom of the section to know what I ordered and from where when I get low of that component / value.

I sew extra pockets in my pants. I have everything I own on my person at all times.

I have some of those bins too and I can never remember what drawer I placed things in, hence I like the see through tackle boxes in my post above.

Besides being lazy, no OCD tendencies, and especially my eyesight going to shit labels on the drawers just don't happen....

I'm at the point where I need a bin drawer for my bin drawers.

I keep wanting to pick up some old IRC or ohmite sales cabinets but the shipping on them is ridiculous on ebay.

but everything was pre labeled.
