Attenuating a Dlator for SE duty

Post by angelodp »

I have an SE amp that has four gain stages. I have the gain sorted out and it plays great. I installed a loop just before the Power tube grid. When I put my Dlator in line its all too much again ( gain wise ). I can just about hit unity gain with the Dlator controls back way off, especially the drive. I am looking for suggestion on attenuating the signal back into the amp from the Dlator to match the SE signal. The added boost of the dilator is driving this amp into oscillation. To be honest the effects I am using work well on the front end, just curious as to possible remedies so I can still have the loop option for wet effects.

I'd try a 12AY7 in it (d'lator) prior to any radical circuit changes....that's what I use in mine, and it's quite sweet, even for PP/ traditional use.
Not tried it with SE, but it will definitely whack down the gain in a non-invasive manner.
If you don't have an AY, then put any lower mu 12A_7 in to see if it gets you closer to the goal.

Do you need 4 gain stages for your playing style?
many be convert over to a parallel effects loop that's buffered, do you have enough current both heater wise and B+ wise to have one more stage?
You may also need to implement a parallel power supply node and another filter!

G, sure, simple works. I tried a 12au7 ( 19 gain factor ), that works albeit too much knock back. I have to score some 12ay7's as that should be the ticket.

You rock, thanks man.

If you can find NOS, that's cool (although pricey) but EH AY's work great, too, for a lot less $$
