What is this component?
Restoring an old German radio from the 1940's/1950's. Removed this component thinking it was an electrolytic cap.
Upon removing the component I can't decide what it really is. It has a + marking on one lead and it measures 9.5uF. Maybe it's a 10uF cap?

Don't have a schematic for said amp
It read's
ELKONDA
ELYT
A4/100V

Re: What is this component?
Yup - a cap.
ELectrolYTic
100V
10u seems a good guess, but over the 60 years or so it may have degraded from some even higher value. I think it looks too small to be higher than 47u, though.

Re: What is this component?
The only caps I've seen that have a bullet sticking out the end were tantalum, but that was in the eighties, and may not apply to a cap that old.

Re: What is this component?
Hmmm the amp is weak sounding now after replacing that "cap"
So maybe it wasn't a cap. What else could it be?

Re: What is this component?
It's probably easier for us to answer if we knew what German radio it actually was, or if we knew from which place in the circuit - and what type of circuit - you removed that component from...
If it's not a cap then maybe it's a bias battery. Then again the tuner/receiver circuit may have had all kinds of odd components.

Re: What is this component?
Elkonda produced electrolytic capacitors, not batteries, AFAIK.
Same for Elyt.
Post some pictures of the radio.
They are not so complicated, I've repaired some of that era.

Re: What is this component?
I have seen similar tantalum capacitors.
How big is that thing?

It's about an inch long

Need a schematic to tellmatt h wrote:Any chance it's like a monster diode/passive regulator sorta thing?
Re: What is this component?
Where was it? Take a picture of the radio now, showing the name of the tubes.
Re: What is this component?
Think the schematic service manual in this (dont have radio museum log in)

This looks like somebody's rebuild but i don't see that part in it

Re: What is this component?
The component connects from pin 1 of the EAA91 (6AL5) to a ground post. This same grounding post also has a connection to the OT (?).
The component in question has been replaced with the blue cap seen pictured here

Sazafraz I think you need to pay for access unfortunately
