Early black face Bassman.

Post by Stevem »

Anyone ever work on one like I will describe here?

1) It’s a G6G-B as shown on the tube chart, but it has the knobs used on the previous blond amps, and they look dirty and original.

2) it has the correct preamp and output section for the G6G-B amp, but it has the power transformer and stacked first filter node section ( two 70 uf) of the AA864 model.

3) it has no bias adjustment pot which is correct for the G6G-B model, as the AA864 has a bias pot.

Never worked on one, but this sounds like a so-called "Tuxedo" Bassman.

I worked on one this year, but it was a complete rebuild... From the bit of research I did for that project, seems there was a lot of variation between them. Don't click on this if you are squeamish... https://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=36079 Cool amp, too bad it was destroyed but ended up sounding pretty good.

Tuxedo Bassman?

Because of the TC stamping before the date?

I have a 67 Bassman that I picked up for free that’s about 35% better then that one you had.

It was left out of its case for a whole Summer under a tree.

Amazingly all it needed was a PT, tubes, filters and to have the pots flushed out.

Works like a charm!

I still don’t believe it to this day.

No, it's the white knobs with the black faceplate.

Ok, got it.
Whoever made that up is right, I think the blackface amps should have kept the knobs from the blond amps!

If nothing else they sure look better then the later knobs once the polish on the center aluminum goes dull .

I did some repairs on one years ago for a friend. Was a 1964 model and in good condition. Also fell in love with the tuxedo look with the Brownface era shaped white knobs instead of the later skirted knobs. The bass channel sounds wonderful for guitar and contrasts with the normal channel nicely.

I loved it so much I then built myself a clone. Still one of my three staple amps at home.
