Correction:
If you're a private person you pay VAT at point of purchase.
It's a different procedure if you're a VAT registered "economic operator"
That's essentially what I meant, - you pay VAT only once and no more hazzle with tax or customs.... 8)

EDIT: Here's an italian page for transformers from Novarria...

Knew about Sowter, maybe one day for a hifi but way too expensive for guitar, I just saw they now have a guitar line, I'd be afraid it's too good, maybe great for a Hiwatt type.

Banzai is silly expensive for wire, though they do state it's Alpha and that's expensive even from Mouser. Alpha's prolly making it in China now. At that price it's cheaper to order Kimber from Handmade in the USA. It does help to google for PTFE rather than Teflon, thanks for that. Bulkwire.com actually ships pretty cheap in a $17 flat rate int. envelope, at least that's what playing around with their order form indicated.

Great link to Elec Novarria, wonder if they make those trannies or source them from asia? Price is low. I already knew about Bartolucci but like Sowter too pricey/fancy for guitar. Also I found this, in the UK, don't know if they do one-offs and what costs are. The high Pound hurts.

Keep it coming, I'm glad I asked.

+1, somehow I forgot Danbury. From what you have said I think they could help at your price point. I have used them in the past and they do the job. UK made and they will cater for enthusiasts, rewinds, etc.

My reference to customs was about the time and hassle getting the Heyboers out of the customs office, not so much the import duty etc. It depends where you are located as to how it is handled and there is no way of calculating what the customs are going to get interested in. Having the invoice outside the packing helps, but it seems only items under $35 pass through the net here.

Major suppliers have now understood this. They have agreements with the international couriers and customs centers so that they can get an order through to you and past customs in one to two days. Digikey is one example that I have used, the parts arrive quicker than most EU sellers. Mostly you need to have a registered VAT numer to be able to use such services.

Best, tony
