3 section caps for Gibson amp.

Post by 67supertrem »

Does any know where I can buy a three section cap to replace the Astron 450V 20uf 10uf 10uf that has long since dried up in my GA-1R Maestro amp?

Thanks,

You can carefully take the old one apart and replace the innards with new electrolytic caps. The new ones are much smaller than the old and will usually fit. I have done this many times with a small hack saw or even a sharp blade (how about a plumbers tubing cutter) then put it back together with heavy guage aluminum tape. You can get it at any heating and ventilating outlet, or even the big orange box. Beats paying $40 for new old stock.

Thanks for the tip Skyboltone.

Sounds tedious but have nothing to lose.

Let you know how it goes.

I've never done it with a plumbers tubing cutter but I'm liking it a whole lot the more I think about it. If you are using a hack saw with very fine teeth (32per") you'll absolutely need a vise.

Good luck
