What speakers to use with Hiwatt DR103 clone?

Post by M Fowler »

I am building a HIWatt DR103 clone and wonder if I should get the Fane speakers for this, any one have some opinions?

Is that a combo Mark or a head. How accurate do you want to be? I had a Hiwatt Lead30 once and it was the punchiest amp I've ever played through. You would be treating it really nice to some good ole British drivers.

I think I would probably start with the Fane Crescendo series speakers and see how you like 'em. FWIW, I think these are the speakers that the DR103 was voiced for. Fane is no longer in business, but I think you can still find them.

Not true. Darin/dartanion is the US distributor.

This is a head version and I was also under the impression that Darin had something to do with Fane speakers as well.

Sorry, I stand corrected.

Find yourself a nice 4-12 cabinet and load it when you can. I picked up a Crate bluevoodoo 4-12B with Crate oem's for a hundred bucks. Good solid cabinet and hardware, 80 bucks in new tolex and she's playing good , looking good, and ready to re load whenever I want.

I have two 412 cabinets but there in use with other amps.

The Hiwatt deserves to have its own cabinet even if it only collects dust. 8)

I have read that to let this amp shine you need to run Fane speakers.

Hi Mark,

The Fane speaker is the sound of the HiWatt.

Weber's Thames speakers are Ted's (RIP) take on them.

Best Regards,

Reputedly the Eminence George Lynch signature speakers are Fane-based.

I'd really like someone to come out with a lower wattage take on Fane. I keep looking for the old vintage 25 watters since there is supposed to be some magic there -- how could Hiwatt and Vox have both been wrong?

I put a combo of two Fane Medusa 150's and two Fane AXA 12's in my Hiwatt cab, they really sound good with my DR 504. I've got some pretty cool cabinets with Celestion's in them and I think the Fanes sound better with the Hiwatt. I'm still looking for another Hiwatt cab. Phil

Studio friend of mine here in town is kind of fond of the HiWatt/SoundCity/Fane gear.
He recommended the Weber Themes as being just like a Fane.
