Switchcraft MILSPEC Phone Jack

Post by David Root »

I finally got off my butt and bought some of these from Mouser. They cost three times as much as the standard jack so many of us have had intermittent connection problems with on the tip to shunt connection.

These look pretty skookum, see pic, and I'm not anticipating any more problems using these. This is the Switchcraft C12AX. They are made in the US of A. Silver plated inserts, and even the tip and shunt terminals are pre-tinned.

502-C12AX. They are about $5 each if you buy 10.

Another thing I noticed, these have lighter colored insulators than the standard grade, = more mica content for better insulation??

I use the Switchcraft Mil-Spec jacks in all of the guitars I mod. Never tried them in an amp though.

Do an ebay search for JJ-089, same thing, 5 for $12.99. Free shipping.
To the US only

I see $2.35 shipping...not free shipping.

I should be so lucky. My shipping to Canada is $20 regardless of order size. The fact that the Canadian dollar is currently 3 to 5 % higher than the US dollar is little comfort! So it costs me $19.35 US!

I stand corrected, $2.35 shipping then. Dunno where I got that from...
They sure look like nice sockets, and switch contacts. M641/12-1 is the mil spec, and JJ-089 is the King manufacturer part number. Switchcraft part number C12AX. Both manufacturers would be conforming to the military specification M641/12-1. Very nice find David, thanks for sharing. Those other style Switchcraft sockets simply do not cut the mustard, given time the contacts that should be closed go open cct. The only switches I have seen like that were in old telephone exchange patch bays, or old aircraft equipment.

David,

Do you use anything to isolate it from the chassis? Some kind of special washer? Been thinking of trying the jack out, but not if I can't isolate it.

Thanks!

There are nylon bushings you can find. I get them at the local Ace Hardware dealer. They have an aisle of drawers and bins filled with onesie parts -- screws, bolts, nylon bushings.... Sorry, I don't have a p/n. This old style hardware dealer is evaporating off the planet. I'm sure you can mail order them. I don't have a loose one, or I'd post a picture.
