Favorite 2 tube preamp, 2 el84 amps?
I am looking for a new amp to build and it will be very compact and I want to use 2 tubes for the preamp.. I'll use two el84's for about 18 watts..
I'm thinking maybe an EF86 (voxish setup) into either a voxy or marshally PI setup..
The songwriter looks interesting as well..
Cheers

are you including the PI as one of the two tubes in the preamp?

budda twinmaster ten
Or mix and match preamps and power sections. i.e. Turn the Vox AC4 into push pull solid state recitifer.
If amperage is limiting your build options have you considered running a dedicated transformer for heaters? it would open up a lot of options. They are small and don't take up much space.

Forgot about that one!
Re: Favorite 2 tube preamp, 2 el84 amps?
I'm putting the final touches on an 18 watt that started as an 18 watt lite, I then modded it to a superlite. Not satified with that, I have since tweaked it to a Mazerati GT preamp w/ TMB and small changes into the superlite power section. It has a cathode bypass switchable boost, bright switch, and SS/Tube rectifier switch. Sounds great clean and driven though I haven't had a chance to crank her up yet. I may snap some pictures in the coming days.
I must say an 18 watt transformer set is a great start for many amps.

That sounds pretty sweet! I was thinking about the Maz GT, I'm just not sure how much gain it'll have. I just want to run a volume and a cut (or tone)bandade wrote:I'm putting the final touches on an 18 watt that started as an 18 watt lite, I then modded it to a superlite. +1 for the Brown Note. I'm waiting for my 18watt IIb parts from Moss right now.

Re: Favorite 2 tube preamp, 2 el84 amps?
i recently did something similar. Two 12AX7s into EL84s.
i tried two gain stages into a long-tail PI and blew my face off.
settled on two gain stages and concertina PI. Now i have a triode left over.
With hindsight, for the PI, i might have used a single-triode envelope for something a little different.

How about this?
Kind of half way between Marshall and Vox.

I converted a Hammond AO-35 reverb amp into a two 12AX7, pair of EL84s and 5Y3.
The V1 is wired parallel and this 18w amp will peel paint off the wall, so I put in a 5751 instead.

I have one of the same exact amp I am going to use the iron from probably. Was your PT pretty hot? This one reads close to 320VM Fowler wrote:I converted a Hammond AO-35 reverb amp into a two 12AX7, pair of EL84s and 5Y3.
