anyone use an IEC socket with integrated fuse? PN needed

Post by wsaraceni »

Looking for part number. I am building something else with a trainwreck express chassis. I want to add a 2nd fuse for the build, and i also want to get rid of the attached power cord. So i figure i can put the mains fuse in the IEC socket

Hoffman carries them.

There should be multiple places that carry similar.
They usually use a 5mm fuse.

Here's the one I use. Uses 5x20 fuses & has storage for an extra/spare in the drawer.

(look on page 1325 of mouser cat http://www.mouser.com/catalog/catalogUSD/645/1325.pdf )

I prefer the screw mounted (wings) type, but they also have snap-in type if you like.
That one has solder tabs, but you can get quick connect style also.....just look @ the specs/pictures on pg 1325.

HTH, Geezer

edit: Tom has it right.....didn't realize Hoffman had started carrying them. Order it along with all your other build stuff from Hoffman & you're set!

thanks guys. for some reason i had a brain fart. i kept seeing 250v thinking i needed to find a 120v version. not realizing that its up to 250v that i had to work with.

i assume i need to use the 120v fuse though, even though it says use a 250v fuse.

Thanks Geezer,
I tried looking at Mouser but as usually I couldn't drill it down due to the filters.

$0.99 at Apex Jr. Comes with the wrong value fuse, but that's can be changed quick enough. What do you want for a buck?

No, the current rating, rupture time (quick-blow, slow-blow, etc.) and physical size is all you are interested in. Fuses will generally be rated at 250V since this allows the same fuse to be sold in all markets. Same as the IEC inlets.

great. only amp i've built was a kit so i never had to research that stuff. this time i'll definitely be trying to size the right size fuse. and adding a HT fuse as well

Has anyone tried the circuit breakers that Weber sells? Seems like it would be safer, since some guy wouldn't be sticking the wrong value in (or worse, a gum wrapper).

The description is a little light on details.

I bought a couple. Then, someone explained to me that the trip load is somehow different from a fuse and they aren't so well suited to tube guitar amps. I forget the whole explanation, but I removed them. My take on it is that they should be OK in place of the mains fuse on the AC side, but are not appropriate for fusing DC, like the HT center tap.

I order most stuff from Digikey so use a Qualtek unit from them. (Canadian prices).

I have and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. Extremely low quality, the reset switch might handle 10 resets before it's toast. I built some CB alligator clips to place across the fuse receptacle for troubleshooting shorts using them in 2 & 3 amp, and they all failed eventually.

I have used these a couple of times. I got mine from Ampmaker in the UK.
