Thinking of building a 6v6 powered Matchless Clubman
I've been wanting to build a 6v6 powered Clubman for awhile. The pentode ef86 second stage seems pretty cool. I heard an el34 version that sounded killer but was stupid loud. I think the 6v6's would offer a little less volume. Plus, I love the way they break up..
I've got a schematic. Any changes i should make other than the obvious stuff? Any suggestions on transformers? I will have to create a layout as well. Some help with that would be much appreciated
Cheers

fender deluxe transformers would probably work nice.
i built a clubman channel on a jcm800 type amp, cool sounding preamp.
i bet it would sound nicer in front of the cathode biased power amp.

6V6 is still going to be very loud, just less so
I suggest a 18W set of iron instead of Deluxe, the higher primary Z and the lower B+ will scale down the original better.

Amplifiers built:
Marshall 2204 head with some mods
Low-power 2204 (cathode biased 6V6s)
Single-knob dual-6K6GT amps using a Wattkins uPCB
AC30 clone with Plexified preamp section
AX84 Firefly

If using the 18w transformers, I would use the ez81 rectifier of convert it to solid state

Most 18W PTs have a 5V tap on the rectifier filament winding.ampfab wrote:If using the 18w transformers, I would use the ez81 rectifier of convert it to solid state
I know cause I'm currently building a 6V6 amp with a GZ34 recto using 18W iron.
I know the Classictone and Trinity do, at least

Re: Thinking of building a 6v6 powered Matchless Clubman
Interested in this as I have a 18 watt set of iron
and also like the ef86 idea with 6V6's.
Just finished a 18 watt ef86 with el84's and really like it.
What schem are you getting ideas from?
This is one I have looked at not sure how accurate it is,
power supply seems similar to HotCat/Straycat.
I read that someone changed to 6V6's in the straycat after changing from 270 to 470
so possibly change the 330/10watt to 470's for 6V6's.
Make any sense?

Why not use the higher HT PT that a 6V6 would normally use but use the 18w OT for 8k verses 6k for 6V6.
Also Turretboard.com has the 310-0-310 PT used in their Supro kit and they use an 18w Marshall style OT at 8k with this PT. They are made by Heyboer.

I agree MarkM Fowler wrote:Why not use the higher HT PT that a 6V6 would normally use but use the 18w OT for 8k verses 6k for 6V6.

Wish I had a higher rated PT lying around. Kinda like to use what I have.
Just bought my kid a car and insurance and it looks like the wife thinks
its coming out of my hobby money.
Possible to go with a SS rect. and hit a higher B+ safely?

Might consider trainwreck transformers. That way you could throw el34s in it if/when you wished it were more powerful. Nothing more annoying then spending a lot of money and time building an amp and realizing that its not powerful enough to use in certain situations. Triode electronics has a very reasonable priced set. I know I'm not building anymore 15w amps for myself, I hate showing up at a jam and the amp not able to keep up. Just my 2 cents.

Sure use what you have to work with it will still be a good amp.dcribbs1412 wrote:I agree MarkM Fowler wrote:Why not use the higher HT PT that a 6V6 would normally use but use the 18w OT for 8k verses 6k for 6V6.

Yes the TW transformers such as Express 600vct with 6k6 OT would work well but might be loud I used the MC set from Triode and love the tone I'm getting. The PT is an overgrown sucker though.ampfab wrote:Might consider trainwreck transformers. That way you could throw el34s in it if/when you wished it were more powerful. Use that extra input on the phase invertor and build a matchless chieftain channel.
