Help location QUALTIY tube amp head with Headphone Jack
Looking for an all-tube guitar amp head, 50w-80w max output
that has a head phone jack for home play. This amp must be
a real player, a keeper, not some cheap poorly made product.
Currently, I own:
1) a Fender G-Dec 30w with a headphone jack
2) a Pigtronix Hog 20w with a headphone Jack
and a Marshall G30RCD with a headphone Jack.
My Fender FM100H is super clean, light, strong, but no headphone.
All are good low-end practice amps with modern features
and some with headphone jacks. But no tubes at all.
Current amps I'm looking for my final all-tube-amp head
to drive a 1x15 cabinet and a 4x10 cabinet, are:
1) Peavey Rockmaster 120w amp head ~ probably too strong/loud
2) Peavey Ultra 60w amp head
3) Peavey Encore 65w amp head
4) Peavey Triumph 60w amp head
5) Peavey 6505 or 5150 120w ~ probably too strong/loud
6) Fender Bassman 50w amp head
7) Fender Supersonic 60w amp head
8 ) Fender Prosonic 60w amp head
9) Fender Bandmaster Reverb head
10) Fender Showman Reverb amp head ~ probably too strong/loud
I do not believe any of the above have headphone jacks.
But, I'm seeking help, ideas and recommendation for procuring an al- tube
head amp in the 50w-80w range that has both the following features:
1) Quality and industry respect for gig play and feature value
2) A headphone jack
Is there anything out in the world the meet my requirements?
Thanks ahead of time for responses.

Kevin O'Connor used to talk about using head phones with power scaled amps, IIRC, besides power scaling a 270 ohm, 10 watt resistor was placed across the output jacks to protect the OT IF no speaker was connected (good practice regardless). Amps from Dante at Island amps also used to allow headphones. What other secret sauce they added to allow headphones I do not know therefore I can not comment??? Give Kevin O'Connor a shout at London Power.
Re: Help location QUALTIY tube amp head with Headphone Jack
I'm sure there is a little box you could make up that would plug into the speaker output jack of any tube amplifier, utilizes a dummy load resistor, and incorporates a jack for a safe headphone level, and safe operation of a "silent" amp.
At least that's the first thing I thought of. Why depend on a manufacturer to provide one, and have this deal breaker on an otherwise perfect amplifier you may find, when you could make any one of em do it?
A quick search gave me this simple schematic, but I'm sure some of the keen eyes and minds here can chime in and refine it into perfection for the application.
*edit* John beat me to the idea. Must be a good one!

there's a few folks around here that can probably build you one
Re: Help location QUALTIY tube amp head with Headphone Jack
Thanks guys. I purchased a Weber Mass 200 attenuator with
the headphone jack dummy load added for $25. That was good.
Sold it this year.
But, maybe Peavey Mashall Mesa Fender, the quality amp mfg's,
just do not make good tube amps with the headphone feature.
I have three solid state amps with headphones, so guess I'll
stick with those for practice amps.
Still gonna get one of those amp heads ~ just have to
know when/where to crank it up

from what I understand the Weber/Mass attenuator voids the warranty on at least one transformer manufacturer's products that I know of
so does the airbrake
your solid state amps consist of tiny components crammed onto a circuit board running at low voltage so there is usually room to add little extra circuits like a headphone amp, which is essentially an IC chip.
chips are good with dip - and salsa!
tubes, on the other hand, require a lot of space, large components, and high voltage which means even a simple headphone amp can take up precious real estate. If you don't mind your amp being the size of an airplane wing I am sure it can be added in

You might be onto something. Maybe someone can start making and selling wing clip-ons for extra circuits for the folks that have run out of real state in their amp chassis .Milkmansound wrote:

The tube/valve amp of choice with headphone circuit features ~ is:
"EVH 5150 iii" with 50watts
* Amp head or Combo Amp options
* 7x12AX7 preamp tubes and 2x6L6 power tubes
* Headphone jack mutes the speakers on the 50w iii ~ only
* No need to have a load or speakers connected when using the headphones
Quote: "The designer of the 5150 iii 50w amp stated TGP that you can run the 50 watt head through phones without a cab hooked up. The headphone output is just the preamp into an EQ filter to mimic a cab. I have used it in combination with the preamp out to record, using the headphone out as an easy latency free reference tone while recording the preamp DI to add impulses later."
ANY OTHER TUBE AMP HEADS
WITH HEADPHONE CIRCUITS THAT MUTE THE SPEAKERS???
Is the EVH 5150 iii the only one?

Not only does it have a headphone jack, it also sports Virtual Tube Illumination.

Thanks, NickC and Beasley . . . . .
I read and studied the Yamaha THR's two years ago when they
began shipping. As far as I can tell, the THR's are solid state.
I was very interested.
But, I ended up buying a Pignose Hog 20 and a Fender GDec30
both solid state with headphone features. I bought several GDec
SD-Card rock albums to play along with, very cool trying to keep
up with Eric, Jimi, Dusty, AC/DC, SRV and other players with their
full backup groups/bands. Actually, awesome!
Now, thanks to both of you, and after reading again about the
Yamaha THRs and their new models, the THR10(high gain)
is on my shopping list, but low priority as it is (I believe) solid state.
So far, my goal is satisfied as the EVH 5150 iii is not only a high quality
amp for live play, but has tubes, 50watts with the headphone jack.
Until I get one, will always be looking for a tube amp with headphone
features and able to output 40watts to 100watts.
Thanks again for the THR heads-up.

Yes the THRs are all solid state. This being said, they sound surprisingly good. I have the 2 speaker version, and i leave it on my desk at work so i can jam on my lunch break (no one seems to mind...yet )Toppscore wrote:NickC wrote:Not only does it have a headphone jack, it also sports Virtual Tube Illumination.beasleybodyshop wrote:Get one of these, you wont be sorry: http://usa.yamaha.com/products/musical- ... uct_lineup

'69 SVT and 8ohm phones.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

Headphones are speakers. I agree. Ear bloods.
