Gretsch 6150t Supro 16t amplifier build

Post by Thomas_H »

Hi,
I'm interested in building a small amplifier with tremolo, like the gretsch 6150t or the supro 16t, but in the small combo from the gretsch or supro super.
Here where I live it's impossible to find one of these, and buy one from the states would be very expensive, so I'm starting from scratch.

I found that the voltage configuration of the PT is 270-0-270V, and it uses a tube rectifier. I'm thinking of using silicon diodes and an old 190-0-190V transformer that I used in my first build, a Hi-Octane.

Would 250V be enough for a 6v6, without ruining the amplifier's tone, or would it be better to buy another transformer and build it with the tube rectifier?

Are there any improvements to include in the circuit? I found an old thread about a supro build over at freestompboxes:
http://freestompboxes.org/viewtopic.php ... 30#p141814

and the schematic:

http://www.in2guitar.com/gretschamp/gre ... 1schem.pdf

For the combo, I googled and found some dimensions as 15 1/2"x 11 1/4" x 7 1/2". The other dimensions I will measure with the available pictures.

My first question would be, is it possible to use a 10" speaker in these combos? Has anyone tried changing the original speaker for a 10" speaker? It will be a tight build, Or should I go with a 8"? Normally I build smaller amplifiers, but this time I'm really wondering if using a bigger speaker would be an improvement, even with the small combo. With the 8" speaker it would fit easier, but here I only found the Weber alnico 8.

In the 10" configuration I found a weber signature series Alnico, a jensen P10r Alnico and a eminence legend series Alnico. Has anyone tried one of these with this kind of amplifier?

The Weber 10 has a big bell cover, maybe that would be a problem...

These are just some thoughts, If anyone is interested in these kind of small amplifiers please share your experience.

Thanks!
Thomas

Hi, after some months, here it is:
I made a solidworks version of it:

the final version:

I tried to copy the valco 1616t faceplate, it looks similar, but I couldn't find the white jewel.
Since the voltage here is 220v I had to use a step-down transformer.
The speaker is an eminance legend alnico 10", and the cab is the size of the gretsch tremolo version, a little smaller ( for a 8" speaker) than the supro cab.
The speaker was exactly the right size for this one!Unforntunately not the right impedance, so I used an extra speaker in parallel, which gave me the 4 ohms required.

Cheers,
Thomas

Nice build. Those are some very large eyelets on that board :)

Apexjr has a nice clear or white lamp assembly. http://apexjr.com/images/PANEL_LIGHTS_CLEAR.JPG

Nice build, You could use a power resistor for impedance matching too. I use these for impedance matching when building attenuators. You could paint the inside of the apexjr clear pilot jewel and get that milky white glow similar to the valco amp. The white jewel from AES is close to the correct look too.
